Recession ??

After days of packing--and loading the POD--I needed a "break" from the apartment (and all the work therein). I decided I'd take my aching, tired body out to dinner. I wasn't sure where I wanted to go so drove past a number of restaurants. My KIA turned in to Golden Corral. "OK, I'll do it." (But almost never go to a buffet restaurant.) Number One: The parking lot was full, available spaces were few and far between!! Number Two: The price for Sunday dinner is $5. higher than other days of the week "because we serve steak" according to the cashier. Well, I "bit the bullet" (metaphor) and paid the price. Number Three: I DON'T EAT STEAK!! I enjoyed asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, cornbread, fish (baked), green beans, okra, potatoes... and ended with warm old-fashioned bread pudding and a cup (actually half-a-cup) of decaf coffee. Number Four: I don't eat the million-calorie desserts I saw on display!!

I was in Golden Corral for over an hour slowly eating from the wide variety of food. The scene before me was better than a lot of TV programs! The restaurant was packed!! (I had trouble finding a place to sit.) The majority of the customers were NOT senior citizens so their dinner was over $13.00. Many families of four, five and six.... I actually kept saying over and over in my head: "Recession? What recession?" I asked my server if this was a customary crowd for a Sunday afternoon. He said: "This is 'dead'; we are usually busier." Furthermore, the same people come in every Sunday and sit at the same table(s). Frequently he gets a $40. tip from a table with seven or more. Think about this for a minute: This is not an upscale "sit down" restaurant where a waiter/waitress takes your order and then serves you. This is a "buffet" where we get our own food. And the "server" (water, iced tea, clears the plates, etc.) gets a large tip. Boy am I naive!! I've believed the media when they said Food Pantries were bare because the unemployed were stretching resources. If there, indeed, is major unemployment in Shelby, Cleveland County, North Carolina, I saw no inkling of that this afternoon.

I drove in light rain to Golden Corral. Later, I got soaked walking from... to the car. It was a torrential rain driving home and frequently lots of water running across the street. I've been home less than an hour and the rain has stopped and there was a hint of sunshine.

I packed all morning (while watching and listening to worship services on TV). Everything from the kitchen is in boxes. I washed dishes--and miscellaneous. I did hand-laundry. As much as possible, everything is being packed away clean. "The end" is in sight (but no time to work on my Income Taxes)!!

Back to the topic of Golden Corral: I saw so much food being wasted. People would push aside a plate of food and go back for something else. The server carried away lots of "garbage." In Haiti, people are begging for food. Likewise, hungry people in some African countries. Shame, shame on gluttonous Americans (in my humble opinion)!!

Postscript, 6:30 PM: The local TV evening news is reporting a tornado touched-down in nearby Gaston County. A mobilehome was destroyed. The owner was taken to the hospital with a heart attack. "Nickel-size hail is some areas." More torrential rain here in Shelby, with lightening and thunder!! Cleveland County is now under a tornado warning. ~~ Wow! now some local areas are reporting golf-ball size hail.

Bob Hope once said, "Today my heart beat 103,369 times; my blood traveled 168 million miles. I breathed 438 cubic feet of air, I ate three pounds of food. I drank 2.9 pounds of liquid, I perspired 1.43 pints. I generated 450 tons of energy. I spoke 4,800 words. I moved 750 major muscles, and I exercised 7 million brain cells. No wonder I'm all tired out!"

I found that quote a few minutes ago (on a single page torn from a magazine) as I shifted, sorted, discarded and/or packed. My strong helper ("Ed") will be back on Tuesday to put the finishing touches on loading the last minute items (bed, rocker, table, computer chair, etc.). Most of the boxes have been stacked in the POD and--wonders of wonders--there is still ample space for the remaining items. I had some anxiety that I had more "stuff" than available cubic feet in the POD!!!!!!!! ~~ I have three days to finalize the packing and, time permitting, do my Income Taxes.

Now I'm beginning to rely on the clothes, bath towels, kitchen utensils, etc., destined for extended travel in the teardrop trailer. Everything else (kitchen, clothes, etc.) is being packed. I did another small load of laundry so those things can be packed away.

I want to run away from my apartment this afternoon!! I want to visit Panera, or some favorite food establishment, and forget the clutter, cleaning, sorting, packing, etc., etc. But I'll stay and dutifully plug away at the project. In a week I'll have time for leisure.

I may have unwittingly committed suicide?!?! I've been so diligent in my project of packing for a move!! (and diligent in my recovery from acute ozone poisoning). So many things have been packed--and boxes labeled. I was full of energy and progressing full-speed this morning. Then I bumped the floor lamp and it crashed to the floor. All three energy-saving bulbs broke and shattered all over the living room floor. I was cautious (so I thought) but cut my thumb. (Sure is difficult to type when I can't use my thumb to press the space bar!!). I knew I should use gloves but they are packed and I don't know where they are!! I picked up the shards with a piece of tissue and then came to the Internet to check regarding a hazard. (In the back of my mind I had heard there was a danger from broken energy-saving bulbs.) For your information, it was over half an hour before I read the following article. It was over half an hour before I opened the front door to air the apartment. It's snowing but I have the front door open!! Only time will tell whether I have subjected myself to long-term health problems.

Danger: The new eco-friendly bulbs contain toxic mercury (picture posed by model). Energy-saving light bulbs are so dangerous that everyone must leave the room for at least 15 minutes if one falls to the floor and breaks, a Government department warned yesterday.

The startling alert came as health experts also warned that toxic mercury inside the bulbs can aggravate a range of problems including migraines and dizziness. And a leading dermatologist said tens of thousands of people with skin complaints will find it hard to tolerate being near the bulbs as they cause conditions such as eczema to flare up.

The Department for Environment warned shards of glass from broken bulbs should not be vacuumed up but instead swept away by someone wearing rubber gloves to protect them from the bulb's mercury content. In addition, it said care should be taken not to inhale any dust and the broken pieces should be put in a sealed plastic bag for disposal at a council dump ? not a normal household bin.

None of this advice, however, is printed on the packaging the new-style bulbs are sold in. There are also worries over how the bulbs will be disposed of.

Under new regulations for hazardous waste, councils are obliged to recycle them. At present, they should be placed in special bins also used for batteries at a council dump. But in future, councils will have to provide a collection service or install special recycling banks for the bulbs.

There are fears that without a proper disposal system, the mercury content could contaminate water supplies.

But disposing of one municipal recycling bin full of bulbs costs about £650 each time, adding to fears of higher council tax bills.

The warnings cast a shadow over Government plans to begin phasing out traditional tungsten lights this month.

Ministers hope that using the more environmentally friendly bulbs will save at least five million tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

The bulbs are due to become compulsory in homes in four years. Campaigners are calling for an opt-out so that people with health problems can still use old-style bulbs.

Others are thinking of hoarding the familiar pear-shaped bulbs so that they can keep on using them even after they have disappeared from the shops.

Independent environmental scientist Dr David Spurgeon warned yesterday: "Because these light bulbs contain small amounts of mercury, they could cause a problem if disposed of in a normal bin. "It is possible that the mercury could be released into the air or from land-fill when they are released into the wider environment. That is a concern, because mercury is a well-known toxic substance."

And dermatologist Dr John Hawk, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that some people already find it difficult to tolerate the fluorescent-strip lighting that is widely used in schools and offices, which works in the same way as the eco-friendly bulbs. He said: "Fluorescent lights seem to have some sort of ionising characteristic where they affect the air around them.

"This does affect a certain number of people, probably tens of thousands, in Britain, whose ailments flare up just by being close to them.

"Certain forms of eczema ? some of which are very common ? do flare up badly anywhere near fluorescent lights, so these people have to just be around incandescent (old-style) lighting."

Postscript, 3 o'clock 3/02/2010: I did not vacuum the carpet. I used dozens of strips of packaging tape (wrapped around my hand, individually) and picked up every little speck of glistening glass, lint, tracked-in blades of grass, etc., etc. I've certainly been side-tracked from my intended projects today!!

4:50 PM: Still snowing!! Oh! how I look forward to Spring and the opportunity to start traveling!! Winter weather has been very unusual for North Carolina!! I've been "apartment-bound" for three months!! Sometimes seven to ten days between trips to the market. Meanwhile, fortunately, I've eaten from a well-stocked pantry (and ideally reduced the amount of things to pack).

Back to the subject of this message: I "chickened out" after an hour and had to close the door. If the weather had been fifty degrees or warmer (customary for this time of year) I would have had the door--and windows--open for hours.

Happy First Anniversary !!

It is such a joy to advertise that this is the first anniversary of my diagnoses of the source of my major health problem!! A year ago I was at death's door and could not seem to recover. On February 9th, 2009, I resolved to sit at the computer and search the Internet until I found an answer. I wrote all the details in a lengthy document that you can read by clicking here.

Today I am in remarkably good health. I am in the process of "downsizing" my possessions, giving up my apartment, with plans to travel extensively. Oh happy day!!

Inquiring Minds Want to Know

Was it the National Enquirer magazine that used the expression "Inquiring minds want to know"?? Perhaps you, too, want to know my status regarding Little Guy.

I've been home from Northern Indiana since October 7th (55 days). I haven't received a subsequent phone call from the owner of Little Guy, and no call from Little Trailer Company. I have not received the reimbursement that I was promised.

I miss "doing" this blog. However, I don't want the topic of my Little Guy Teardrop trailer to get buried under information about health and nutrition, etc., etc.

Inquiring minds OUGHT to know that I had problems with my Little Guy. Charlie had problems with his Little Guy. Numerous others sent their Little Guy to Elkhart for repairs.

FYI: I'm slowly "downsizing." Lots of nice things have been transferred from my apartment to local Thrift Shops. Today I took a load to a thrift shop that helps support local shelters for the homeless. ~~ I have also donated a large number of new items to the Senior Center--items suitable for door prizes.

Truthfully, I labored for hours last weekend compiling the following message (below the lines). Here I am, days later, ready to publish... but only after I prepared the blog / message that follows this one. Today's message from BeliefNet about "apologies" really spoke to my heart and conscience. I want to apologize if I have hurt anyone with my messages regarding my experience with my Little Guy Teardrop trailer. Notice: "my" experience with "my" Little Guy. ~~ Putting events in chronological order.

There is one thing I find frustrating about a "blog": Reverse order!! The most current message is at the top. The readers may be confused because they don't know the events that went in to the current comments. I'm going to attempt to put the details in chronological order.

The first problem appeared in late May 2009 when I opened Little Guy for the first time after the long winter. No help... because "your warranty has expired."

The second problem was repaired in July. Later, I published pictures of the repair project.

The reoccurring problem, and a solution.

The owner of the company that manufacturers Little Guy spoke to me (on the phone) several times regarding scheduled pick up of my trailer. I emptied it completely and stayed home waiting for the truck. I wrote this e-mail message.

I had plenty of time so I published a series of blogs titled How-I-Do-It (September 6th through September 14th). Off topic, yes, but valuable reading for someone new to camping with a Teardrop trailer.

It seemed to me there would never be a truck to pick up my Little Guy. During a phone conversation regarding another delay, I quite unexpectedly asked if I could take Little Guy to Elkhart. The owner seemed delighted by my suggestion and offered to pay all my expenses. Then I was undecided.

I published numerous blogs about my trip to, and from, Northern Indiana. Here is my Greetings from Elkhart.

I checked on the progress of the repair.

I did a lot of sightseeing while waiting for the trailer.

Eight days later my Little Guy and I were reunited. OK, Lorraine, if you said the repairs were excellent, why are you writing negative blogs??

I'm not the only owner of a Little Guy Teardrop trailer that has experienced problems. I saw many units at the manufacturing site, in Elkhart, awaiting repairs. Mine seemed insignificant compared to others I saw. And "Charlie" had a tail light fall off and drag along the highway--while he was pulling his Little Guy!!. He had only had his Little Guy for about three months!! He bought it because he talked to me while I was camping at Lake Powhatan. His unit was already showing water damage.

I stopped writing blogs and published an apology. I explained that I was so sick. Feeling an obligation to my readers, I published What Happened to Lorraine?? . Perhaps I had too much time to think!! No phone call from Little Guy in Canton, or Little Trailer Company in Elkhart, to see if I was happy with the repairs. The receipts had been photocopied, and mailed, and I have proof they were delivered--but no reimbursement. Charlie phoned several times to tell me about the "run around" he was getting regarding repairs.

I wrote, and published, Time for brutal honesty!! followed three days later by Time for brutal honesty!! (continued).

The owner of Little Guy read my recent blog and called to explain that everything had been resolved. I expressed my appreciation.

Charlie's trailer was not picked up on Thursday as promised!!

The Power of a Sincere Apology

Apologies happen—sometimes multiple times a day. We apologize when we unintentionally say something hurtful, when we make a mistake at work, or when we bump into somebody on the street. And then there are the bigger apologies—those what we should have addressed months or years ago. Maybe we said something to alienate someone, perhaps we judged too quickly or did something that we regret. Saying “I'm sorry” remains one of the hardest things to do. We justify our actions, we present half-apologies, we blame the one we’ve hurt, or we expect something in return. Yet a true apology can clear the air and potentially heal a relationship.

Here are 10 guidelines on how to truly say "sorry."

Align Head and Heart

It’s easy to say “I’m sorry,” but meaning it is another story. A true apology occurs when the heart and head are in alignment, when you intellectually and emotionally accept the responsibility for causing another person pain, even if you’ve done it unintentionally. Becoming accountable for your actions is the foundation of an honest apology.

Write Before Speaking

If you are struggling to find the right words, write your apology down first. Writing gives you the space and time to see how you really feel—for instance, you’ll discover whether you are truly sorry or whether you harbor any lingering hostility toward the person. Its important to deal with these feelings before approaching the one you’ve hurt, or you may reopen the conflict.

Don't Expect Anything in Return

A true apology is a selfless act—an apology is insincere when it is about wanting (forgiveness, attention,) and not about giving. If you hurt a loved one with words or actions, take a moment to accept your role in what has happened and to imagine how you would feel if the same was done to you. At that point you can begin to make an apology that requires nothing from the one who is receiving it. Keep it simple: “I understand that I really hurt you and I want you to know that I am truly sorry.”

Don't Respond Defensively

When you apologize you are tapping into humility by acknowledging your weaknesses and recognizing the grace of another human being. For example, if a friend tells you that you hurt her feelings by saying something insensitive, acknowledge the slip without becoming defensive or blaming (i.e. “I thought you wanted me to be honest with you!” or “You always speak like that to me”). When it’s time to apologize, experiment with something like this: “I didn’t realize that my words were so hurtful, but I can see now how they must have stung. I truly am sorry that I caused you any pain.”

Create a Clear Intention

Be sure to clarify the intention of your apology—even when the person you’ve hurt is not open to receiving your words. Ask yourself if you truly are sorry that you’ve inflicted pain and when the answer is “yes,” work to find the appropriate words to illustrate your feelings. Regardless of the words you choose, your true intention will shine through—so be honest with yourself before approaching another with an apology.

Be Present

A sincere apology can be spoken, written, or simply felt strongly (for example, when directed at somebody who has passed on). There is no right way to articulate your feelings of apology. All you need to do is acknowledge your part in the other person’s pain without rushing through the moment.

Commit to Being Better

A sincere apology also includes a commitment to become a better person—to avoid making the same mistake again. After acknowledging the ways in which you hurt another, make an effort to express the ways in which you will act differently in the future. For example: “I’m sorry I hurt your feelings. Now that I know that speaking in that tone of voice rubs you the wrong way, I will work to change the way I approach you.”

Remain Grounded and Accepting

As you prepare to say you’re sorry—and during the actual apology— stay grounded and strong; be with the uncomfortable feelings that arise within you; and accept whatever reaction you get from the other person.

Drop Your Justifications

Our tendency is take things personally, so personally that our egos and minds convince us that we were justified in acting in a way that hurt another person. We focus on the “why” instead of their feelings. Instead of acknowledging that we’ve contributed to sadness or anger or disappointment in another, we hide behind reasons for doing what we did. An apology is sincere when we are able to recognize the feeling and move past the “why.”

Release Guilt, Soothe Pain

Though a true apology is selfless, by nature it is also mutually beneficial. A sincere apology releases the heart from guilt while soothing the pain of another. Guilt robs the soul of joy and inner peace. By making a heartfelt apology, you acknowledge the hurt you’ve inflicted on another, releasing his or her pain while also defusing your guilt. This can also begin the process of restoring the trust that’s been broken.

Honesty

To be honest means to speak the truth, even if it's difficult or gets you into trouble. Honest people com-municate in an open, upfront way; they do not lie, cheat, steal, or manipulate information to conceal it from others. The exception is occasionally telling a "white lie" to protect someone's feelings. In recent days we have seen how dishonesty harms other people, even causing financial and political ruin. Today more than ever, children need to learn the importance of keeping their word, telling the truth, and being trustworthy. Honesty isn't just the best policy—it's the only way society can function.

In total fairness to Little Guy, I received a conciliatory phone call, this afternoon, from the owner. Prior to calling me, he phoned Charlie and Mary and their situations have been resolved. My grateful thanks!!

The following is an e-mail message to Dave Reynolds (owner of the facility that builds Little Guy Teardrop trailers) in mid-September 2009 (after a couple of phone conversations):

Dave,

Did you visit my blog? True, it isn't specifically devoted to Little Guy!! But every time I travel I document the details of the teardrop travel. Everywhere I go the trailer and I attract attention. People want to see the trailer. Honestly, I'm delighted to show it off!! In Front Royal, VA, two ladies approached me apologizing for the interruption. "May we see the trailer?" After I briefly explained the history of Teardrops, and showed the interior, one asked: "Do you travel alone?" I confirmed that I travel alone. "Aren't you afraid?" I assured her that--because of my faith--I have perfect peace during my travels. I linger in conversation as long as the inquirer wants to talk. Before I leave, I give them one of my business cards. (I've given away nearly 200 cards!!)

Because of my enthusiasm when I talk to people, and the positive nature of my travel blog, I may have indirectly influenced the sale of several Little Guys. I know of one specifically: "Charlie" of Columbia, South Carolina. I visited with him in camp at Lake Powhatan near Asheville (just off the Blue Ridge Parkway).

I found it amusing--at Tom Johnson Camping Center, Marion, North Carolina--when my least-expensive... attracted so much attention. Expensive Class A motorhomes, 5th wheels, travel trailers with slideouts... and mine was the topic of conversation. When I was in the lobby (using free WiFi) people would ask (but they knew the answer) "Do you own that cute little trailer?"

On my blog is a "StatCounter" that records the visitors. I regularly have viewers from a Google search for "teardrop trailer."

The first of August, the Teardrop Tribune (published by Little Guy) had a brief comment about me and listed my blog. I immediately began to receive numerous hits. Two separate guests spent over thirty (30) hours reading each travel blog. Many spent hours but not to the extreme.

For my own knowledge, I search the Internet for information. It made sense to me that I should join WebRing and post it at the top of my blog. "Teardroppers" can jump right into that aspect of my blog without reading about my other passion: Health and Nutrition. I've made it easy for the novice to quickly find everything about Teardrops. They can click a link and see an endless variety of models.

I'm sure you're familiar with the goldmine of information but I had to find it one nugget at a time. Hopefully I've made it easy for a "newbie" to appreciate this lifestyle that moves at a slower pace.

It's easy for me to carry on a conversation. I'm well traveled, and I've owned many RVs. Florida is perhaps the only state I haven't visited!! I lived--and camped--in Europe. I'm articulate--and not bad looking for an old lady (LOL). Perhaps you will agree that I have been a valuable spokesperson for Little Guy?

Having said all that, I have a request. Build me a Little Guy that won't leak, rust, corrode, or hinges splinter out of wood. Make it a shining example of the craftsmanship that goes into construction of a Little Guy. Make it so beautiful that people will want to own a Little Guy!!

I'm quick to point out to inquirers that my trailer is "one step above tent camping." I admit that my style is "primitive."

Dear Reader,

Instead of a shining example of the craftsmanship, my trailer was returned with wood and metal shavings inside. Water spots on the exterior because it had been put through a chamber to check for leaks.

Charlie (my acquaintance in South Carolina) has already had problems with his Little Guy (less than three months). He's getting the "brush off" from Little Guy.

Mary, in Oklahoma, has been insisting that she will purchase a Little Guy - BECAUSE - OF - THE - POSITIVE - PICTURE - THAT - I - HAVE - PORTRAYED - OF - MY - TRAVELS. - Honestly, I'm heartsick because - AT - LEAST - TWO - PEOPLE - were willing to invest in a Little Guy on my recommendation.

I haven't wanted to write this "blog"; I haven't wanted to sound critical or negative. However, I feel I have an obligation to my readers to caution them that they might be buying a teardrop trailer that will develop problems after the warranty expires. Time for brutal honesty!! I haven't had the "heart" to write blog messages!! For many months, I've been so enthusiastic about my Little Guy and about my travels (don't you agree?)!! Things changed radically for me when I arrived in Elkhart, Indiana, for repairs on my Little Guy. I'll be honest: I was a pain in their wallet!!

I'm not a "complainer." If not for an interested third party, I would never have gotten repairs. (Remember, I had hired two local North Carolina carpenters....)

I was very congenial with the manufacturer. "Can we wait an extra week to pick up your trailer? It will be 'out of the way' for the truck to come through Charlotte." Later (with a truck coming to Charlotte), "Can you wait a few more days? There's a delay with the shipment to Charlotte." When I suggested that I pull Little Guy to Elkhart, I was told they would pay my expenses. (I won't hold my breath.) Numerous times, phone calls were not returned as promised. Brutal honesty: I fell "out of love" with Little Guy!! So how could I write blog messages with a broken heart??

Furthermore, I enjoyed the time spent editing, and publishing the blog. ~~ The trip to Northern Indiana wore me out!! I'm better now but moving slowly. This too shall pass but wanted to explain why I have not finished publishing details of the recent trip. I've been so sick the last couple of days. I don't know the source of the problem but anticipate that it will go away in a couple of days. I've spent most of today in bed because that's a warm and cozy place. I've felt so cold!! (But it isn't that cold outside.) Last night, and this afternoon, I took a long hot bath. ~~ I don't want to think about Swine Flu, or ordinary flu, but I was in a lot of public places last week. I touched a lot of gas pump handles, and entry doors. Again, I request your prayers for my speedy recovery. Thanks a billion!!

I apologize for not posting a message earlier. The last trip took a lot out of me--physically and financially!! I did not anticipate the repairs would take a week; I did not prepare to be away for three weeks!! I failed to take my vitamins and nutritional supplements so my body is depleted. I did not follow my Vegan diet so joints ache from too much sugar. Honestly, I'm a wreck!! I covet your prayers for a speedy recovery!! Sincere thanks, and God bless you!!

In Shelby, just prior to arrival at my apartment: A shower for the Teardrop (self service car wash), and fruit and veggies for Lorraine. I drove into the apartment parking lot at 3:45 PM; total miles traveled: 2,447; total miles today: 151; total time: 21 days, four hours, thirty minutes. I unloaded some of the "stuff" but will let the remainder wait until tomorrow.

"Best laid plans...." Remember that old saying?? I did not purchase gas in Asheville so left the Blue Ridge Parkway at Little Switzerland because I was afraid I would run out of gas before reaching the Boone area. So I continued homeward from Marion, North Carolina.

Highway to Heaven

Shelby, North Carolina, here I come!! Lord willing I will arrive at my apartment later today. I plan to take an indirect route--rather than the Interstate. I'll take the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville to Linville Falls and then south to Shelby. On my earlier trip, I missed part of the route due to construction. Before day's end I should be able to say I've driven the entire Blue Ridge Parkway. In fact, except for that portion, I've driven it both directions. In the future, I can concentrate on traveling to new scenic locations.

The nice folks at Panera Bread allowed me to stay overnight in their parking lot. It rained during the night and is dark and gloomy right now (8 o'clock). In fact (I just peeked outside), it is raining quite hard. I'll take the Blue Ridge Parkway but may not get any pictures. Below: Another picture (yesterday) "above the clouds."

Pigeon Forge to Asheville

It has been an extremely long day!! Twelve hours ago I was waiting for Atlanta Bread Company (in Pigeon Forge, TN) to open so I could use WiFi. It is 7:00 PM and I am in Panera Bread in Asheville, North Carolina, using WiFi. I've only traveled 152 miles today--and most of those miles were at speeds less than 40 mph. I was very frustrated by all the traffic in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. At 1:30 I suddenly decided it was time to put distance between me and the tourist attractions.

It was beautiful driving through The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I experienced bumper to bumper traffic like three weeks ago.

However, the Blue Ridge Parkway seems less traveled but is more spectacular (IMHO). I experienced the 2,222nd mile of my trip at approximately mile post 458 of the Blue Ridge Parkway--at 3:40 PM. The road sign picture was taken at the percise location.

I love the Blue Ridge Parkway!! I feel so close to Heaven here. Here I am above the clouds!! The clouds--and autumn colors--were beautiful!!

I have not decided where I will sleep tonight. There isn't a WalMart or Cracker Barrel in this part of Asheville.

Everyone comments about the "adorable," "cute" (ie: beautiful) teardrop trailer. Well, trailer's owner (Lorraine) made a bold move last night. I did not want to fight the stream of traffic to Cracker Barrel, or WalMart, so I found a pull-through in the parking lot of a major hotel (perhaps one-eighth mile from Atlanta Bread Company). Property line shrubs on one side, two vehicles on the other side. I crawled in to my sleeping bag at 8:26 PM and only awakened when two large tour buses arrived (11:55). I awakened again at 6:13, refreshed and eager for the events of the day. I was disappointed to find the nearby Atlanta Bread Company still closed at 6:30. So I boldly took advantage of the Ladies Room in the adjacent Shell station. ~~ This town (Pigeon Forge) reminds me of Las Vegas--it never sleeps! Flashing neon lights beckon the traveler to "come on in." Exception: Atlanta Bread Company doesn't open until 8!! ~~ When comfortably seated--with bagel and coffee--it took an hour to get connected to the Internet. (Who knows? Computers have a mind of their own!?) I've learned to be patient!! After all: "Life moves a little slower on Teardrop time."

Divine Appointment

Yesterday afternoon, about five, leaving Atlanta Bread Company a young lady approached me. I had just deposited the laptop computer on the back seat of the KIA and was preparing to drive to Dollywood. "That's the cutest trailer!! Do you travel alone?" I assured her that I do. "I wish I could get my mother to travel; I can see her in a little trailer like this." We talked for an hour, and I showed her the inside. We both recognized that this was a Divine appointment from our Heavenly Father. I could have departed ten minutes earlier--or ten minutes later--and we would have missed one another!! I gave her my card with the "blog" address and encouraged her--and her mother--to read about my travels. Perhaps my solo senior travels will prompt another solo senior to do likewise!?

When I arrived at Dollywood, they had just closed!! Furthermore, they are closed today: Tuesday. At this hour, I am uncertain about the day's schedule.

My new young lady-friend shared this information: Traffic is light compared with previous years. Tourist business is slow. It used to take four hours to reach Pigeon Forge from Interstate 40. That is just beyond imagination!!

Using a unique route home would have been preferable BUT there is comfort in retracing my steps. I KNEW I could get WiFi at Atlanta Bread Company in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. AND, I wanted to give this area one last chance: I was not impressed a year ago!! So I plan to visit Dollywood, and Gaitinburg--and never return to this tourist "trap" again. I want to drive back through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park because raining nineteen days ago. ~~ I failed to time myself from Interstate 40 to this parking lot. It seemed like an hour because highway construction all the way and bumper-to-bumper traffic. We had to stop for every signal!!

I left Berea, Kentucky, at 8:25 this morning, after breakfast in Cracker Barrel. On my way to this location, I stopped at Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in Renfro Valley (but it is closed on Monday and Tuesday). I made a five miles detour in Corbin, KY, to see the "cafe" where Colonel Sanders started his famous Kentucky Fried Chicken. I also visited the Museum of Appalachia, in Norris, TN, but limited my viewing to the gift shop and whatever buildings I could see from the parking lot. I didn't want to pay the high price of admission. ~~ Only 175 miles today.

Creation Museum--a must see !!

It has been a long day!! One-and-one-half hours after leaving Panera in Dayton, I was at the Creation Museum near Cincinnati. I was there for over five hours and could have spent more time!! I didn't get into the beautiful gardens. I can not over-emphasize that this is a MUST SEE!! The details are exquisite!! (Pictures to follow.)

Three hours of driving brought me to a Cracker Barrel--in Berea, Kentucky--where I will spend the night. I'm so extremely tired because lack of sleep last night, up early, lots of walking at the museum followed by long drive. (Lack of sleep last night because the sweeper-truck seemingly spent hours in the WalMart parking lot!!) A total of 201 miles today.

Out of curiosity--in the trailer--I turned on my laptop computer to see if Cracker Barrel has free WiFi. To my amazement I was immediately able to log on to my Google e-mail and Blogger. I didn't have to "sign in" like with Panera, or the BP truck stop. Obviously, Cracker Barrel is a resource I have overlooked!!

Panera Bread is such a delightful retreat from the cold!! It was 51 degrees as I stood outside the entrance at 7:30 this morning waiting for them to open. It was 53 degrees inside my little trailer, at 6:20, when I crawled out of my sleeping bag inside a sleeping bag. (Spent the night in the nearby WalMart parking lot.)

Spiritual Renewal

It was with great reluctance that I left the home of "cousin" Doris Clark--at 7:10 this morning. Staying in her home was like a "spiritual retreat." No, we didn't have a preacher delivering a message. No, we didn't have special music from a choral group. In fact, Doris doesn't own a TV, radio, CD or DVD player. The Old German Baptist Brethren share the belief of the Amish that families can function very well without a lot of the so-called modern conveniences. To sit quietly in a rocking chair listening to the ticking of the clock was music in my ears!! It's actually a relief not to have a TV available!! (Except for the local newspaper, I don't know what's going on in the world.) Spending time with a lady whose very dress and covering are an outward expression of her Christian faith speaks much louder than the sermons of many preachers!! Fresh green beans, tomatoes from her garden, raspberries from the yard of a family member... were more delicious than the finest banquets served at a retreat center (IMHO). I experienced anxiety, and sleeplessness, regarding Little Guy repairs BUT felt calm and peaceful in her home and in her presence. I was so blessed to spend eleven nights in her home. The invitation to stay with her was genuine and extended within hours after my arrival in Northern Indiana.

One evening, sitting in a rocking chair, listening to the clock, I remembered a few words from long, long ago. "My grandfather's clock was too large for the shelf, so it stood ninety years on the floor." I asked Doris if she remembered that poem. She started singing the words (I had forgotten it was a song). I hope and pray that the memory never fades of a dear lady sewing the binding on a homemade quilt, and softly singing the following song.

Panera Bread in Dayton, Ohio

Two weeks ago I spent time in this Panera Bread--in Dayton, Ohio--working on my blog. This afternoon, I've spent two hours publishing the previous several blog messages. I anticipate that I will stay in the nearby WalMart tonight. ~~ It has been a dark gloomy day with rain sprinkles all morning. One time this afternoon there was a brief glimpse of the sun. It is cold and windy. I may be inside this warm establishment until time to quickly crawl into my sleeping bag!! ~~ I traveled secondary routes except for approximately ten miles as I neared Dayton. Only a total of 232 miles today but I'm not in a big hurry. Thus far, I've driven 1,750 miles since I left my apartment in Shelby, North Carolina. ~~ Tomorrow I plan to visit the Creation Museum near Cincinnati, Ohio.

American Countryside Farmers Market

Moments ago, I departed American Countryside Farmers Market. It is quite an inspiring place!! During my stay in Northern Indiana, I missed other opportunities to visit--and browse. Yes, that's my KIA and Little Guy in the parking lot but the facility was closed. Today I browsed every inch and visited with many of the vendors. There are so many beautiful things for sale but I repeatedly said "I don't need a thing; I'm just looking." In reality, I bought three apples, two bell peppers, and two tomatoes that I assured are locally grown and only hours off the plant or tree. I'll enjoy them on my return trip to North Carolina.

Perhaps the same information is on the American Countryside Farmers Market web site but some bears repeating: "Welcome to the largest woodpeg barn, Amish-built, in the World! This three story structure is constructed in the old-world tradition using wooden pegs to hold the mortis and tenon wood joints together. The expansive building, longer than a football field, features hundreds of solid heavy timber beams, columns and braces that are prepared with mortis and tenons, cut and notched together for the framing of the three-story barn structure. It has three towering cupolas with the center cupola topping out at 84-feet high.

"High clerestory windows provide natural lighting and ventilation for the large open interior spaces in the barn. It is air-conditioned and open year-round. The columns, slope beams and braces were harvested locally and sawed earlier this year [2006?] on an Indiana Amish farm. The logs are from white and red oak, hickory, beech and poplar trees. Most of the beams are from seasoned Douglas firs from Idaho. By using seasoned, dryer timers, less shrinking occurs. For the main structure of the barn, over nine truckloads of Douglas fir timbers were shipped from Idaho. The largest timbers, making up the center court, are a gigantic 16'X16', and came to the building site over 40' long!!

"The American black walnut found on the wooden staircase railing and trim came from a 96 foot tree which fell during a 2003 storm in a forest preserve behind architect LeRoy Troyer's home. The wood was harvested, cut up and air dried for three years before being used at the Farmers Market.

"The hardwood pegs are made by pounding them through a short, one-inch round steel pipe. They are then pounded into pre-drilled holes in the timbers to secure the mortis and tenons. The timbers and wood pegs continue to dry throughout the years to ensure a tight wood-to-wood bond that is virtually impossible to take apart. Once cured, the only way to remove the timers is to drill out each of the wood pegs that hold them together. This barn is a very sturdy building, as The Troyer Group, and architectural, engineering and construction management firm, designed the heavy timber from to withstand winds up to 100 miles per hour.

"Four Amish construction crews worked together, totaling about thirty workers. Orie Lehman, of Lehman Carpentry, Shipshewana, IN, was the construction coordinator for this project. David Bontrager and his son Rudy, of D.L. Bontrager Construction, Middlebury, IN, led the barn raising which began in June 2006. David's father, Joe, deceased, was a barn builder since the 1930's. He passed his barn-raising legacy on to succeeding generations beginning in the 1980's. Rudy is the third generations barn raiser."

Cousin Doris and I visited the Old German Baptist Brethren school (specifically for their member children). We participated in the music instruction for the older students. Very interesting information for this old lady who never had any of that training. I sing "by ear" (ha!) according to the way I memorized the song. ~~ In a nearby field, equipment was harvesting corn.

En route back to Wakarusa, (from the OGBB school) cousin Doris and I stopped at a trailer manufacturing plant near her home. I understand it is a relatively new business but we were assured that they are "doing well." "[The campers is] extremely lightweight and durable, [and the] all-aluminum and composite construction is void of even a splinter of wood! Modeled after the lightweight aluminum structure made popular in the aerospace industry, [the camper] features lightweight aluminum construction throughout, including the tongue-and-groove aluminum flooring. Unlike traditional tent campers that are fully constructed of plywood and pine (which can rot out in just a few short camping seasons, the [camper] is made to stand the test of time!"

Non-vegan for a night

Last night, my hostess and I had a "Thresher's Dinner" at Amish Acres, in nearby Nappanee. I assume the idea is (was) to feed a crew of hungry farm hands with a hardy meal--but really too much food for two "senior" ladies!! It was listed as "all you can eat" but we couldn't eat the portions they brought to the table "family style." First: Ham and bean soup, Cole slaw, pickles, apple butter, country butter and fresh baked bread. Second: Roasted chicken, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn. Finally: Our choice of pie from a variety of ten or twelve. Of course, we had an array of beverages to choose from. Oh! so delicious!! I ate far more than I usually do, and I enjoyed every bite!! ~~ Although my cousin Doris has lived in Northern Indiana her whole life, she had never been to Amish Acres (considered a "tourist attraction"). She enjoyed the meal and the experience eating in the big old barn restaurant--and browsing the shops. It was misting rain so our stay was confined to indoors. With sunshine, earlier in the day, we might have walked around the farm or taken a buggy ride to see the eighty-acre farm.

Due to the economy (perhaps), the parking lot was almost empty when we arrived at 5:00 PM. A few diners straggled in after us. A large tour bus with fifty or more passengers arrived as we were leaving so that was nice for the restaurant. The hostess admitted that business has been slow, when I questioned her. (I remember an earlier visit [2000] when the parking lot was so full I could barely find a parking place.) Likewise, few cars in the parking lot when I visited Amish Acres on Wednesday, September 30th.

I see a lot of RVs on the highways in this area; the Fairgrounds RV Park has lots of units. The several RV Parks in Shipshewana seemed full of recreation vehicles. But I drive by plants where RVs were previously being manufactured and the company is out of business, grass and weeds growing in the parking lots. An RV dealership, in Elkhart, completely out of business. A very sad state of the economy in this area of Northern Indiana. President Obama was in Wakarusa, at the Monaco plant, a few months ago. Because of the high unemployment... Obama has been in the area twice.

Unprepared !!

When I hastily loaded a minimum of things--two weeks ago--I failed to pack the right clothing!! I brought one pair of jeans, one pair of "peddle pushers," and two pair of shorts. Lots of T-shirts, one sweater and one coat. Plenty for a one week trip!?!? Also, two dresses for Church with my Old German Baptist Brethren cousins--and dressy shoes. But the weather has turned cold and windy, with rain. I wear the jeans and sweater every day!! Cousin Doris included my things with some of her laundry so I periodically have clean jeans (and underwear, ha). ~~ There is a special event this afternoon and I should wear a dress. Old German Baptist Brethren ladies always wear dresses and I like to do likewise while with them. I wish I had "long johns" to wear under my ankle-length dress!! ~~ It was 42 degrees outdoors when I crawled out of bed at 8 AM this morning. Frankly, I'm glad I'm staying in a well-insulated house because I would have slept inside a sleeping bag, inside a sleeping bag--in Little Guy. (Yes, I brought two sleeping bags.) I'm staying on in Wakarusa for a few more days for a weekend event.

Incidentally, just a hint of autumn color but I had to watch carefully to find even one tree. (Can you see the color in this small [top] picture??)

A cold, dark, cloudy morning with rain predicted. In fact, we had rain during the night. I have on my coat while using free WiFi at MacDonalds (in Wakarusa). I just wanted to "touch base" and let you know I'm still in Indiana. The following is a story I copied from the local newspaper.

As the need for humanitarian assistance grows around the globe, the Mennonite Relief Sale takes on added significance.

GOSHEN -- While the setting is distinctly Goshen, the ripples of Saturday's Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale span the globe. With the economy the way it is, nobody expected the sale to break records. Preliminary totals show Saturday's auctions brought in an estimated $355,000 compared to last year's $389,965. That money goes to the Mennonite Central Committee to help people worldwide. "That's what it's all about, all the humanitarian things they do," said David Yoder, spokesman for the sale.

The Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds serve as the venue for the entire two-day event. Amish buggies and apple butter, quilts, cheese and pulled-pork sandwiches all enhance the local flavor. There were the standard features of the sale: The auctions, key among them the quilt auction; the pancake and sausage breakfast, which Yoder said was "crazy," it was so busy; and the food vendors, some of whom highlight food and educational materials about MCC work around the world.

One new feature this year was a tent about a staple food for many of the world's poor people: Rice. The idea started with Louise Claassen of Hively Avenue Mennonite Church in Elkhart. Gesturing to the international food court tent, Claassen said, "So many people are starving and here we are feeding ourselves." As thousands of people walked by, a few stopped in. They got a free dish of rice and a sampling of the various ways it is served across the world. They could add fruit, or curry powder, or soy sauce, for instance. People also learned that a dime will buy a person a bowl of rice in Cambodia. "We've had really quite an amazing response," Claassen said. One man promised a $300. match if the booth raised at least that much. They got it. A young girl came by donating $10. A little while later she came back, donating another $10.

Just like all of Saturday's proceeds, the rice donations go to MCC. Not only do they provide food, they help provide clean water for people in Colombia, or teach artisans business models in Kenya. They'll provide HIV care kits around the world, too, with $2,520 raised toward that end.

In addition to all of that, some food options showed off the world: From apple fritters to hummus, from donuts to egg-rolls to tamales, the people at the sale were reminded they were there for a common cause: "It's communities coming together, donating funds," Yoder said.

Life in the slow lane!!

I've quoted it before: "Life moves a little slower on Teardrop time." Things move slower in northern Indiana, too--in my humble opinion. Horses and buggies; farmland as far as the eye can see, corn and soybeans have not been harvested; blue skies, puffy white clouds; meandering secondary roads; charming old homes. I love it!! While most people were in Church, I've been in Panera Bread for several hours. Except for the cold and snowy winters, I'm sure I would love to live in this community.

On Friday evening, two cousins and I visited the Elkhart County Fairgrounds for the Mennonite Relief Sale. We viewed the beautiful array of quilts that would be auctioned off the next day. We listened to the music and singing by the Mennonite Men's Chorus. Every imaginable food item was available and the crowds of people were enjoying everything from Apple fritters to Z.. (you name it). ~~ Later I learned that one quilt sold for $2,100. (on Saturday). Likewise similar high price on multiple other quilts.

Gratefully, a 4th, 5th, 6th (?) cousin has been very gracious about sharing her home with me. I may be able to pick up my Little Guy trailer Monday afternoon.

So much has happened; there is so much to share!! I hope to publish details at a later date. Today is "day eleven" of my trip and en route to Panera the 1200th mile. Conceiv-ably, I will have traveled over 2000 miles before I get back to Shelby, North Carolina.

Little Guy Repair

On Wednesday, I visited the facility where Little Guy Teardrop trailers are built. I was anxious to see what progress had been made since I dropped off my trailer on Tuesday morning. In these pictures you can see that they removed the side walls and are replacing them. I thought I would have it back by now but 2:22 Friday afternoon and I haven't heard from them.

Lunch in Panera. I spent the morning at the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Indiana. Senior admission: $6.00. Boy did I ever walk down "Memory Lane"!! I remember so many of the units that have been preserved. My parents had a Schult; I remember the 1957 Serro Scotty. Two old relics: 1928 Pierce Arrow Fleet Housecar and "yours truly". ~~ I took a lot of pictures and may publish them here when I have more time to prepare well-scripted blogs.

All day yesterday at Shipshewana. Later today a quilt auction at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds. Actually, the auction is tomorrow but we can view the quilts tonight.

Sorry!! I can't always find a place with WiFi. I'm sure there are many locations but I seldom find them. In truth I seem to go from Panera to Panera!! It's Wednesday and I am in a Panera in Goshen, Indiana. Last blog was Saturday from a Panera in Dayton, Ohio.

It has been a wonderful trip thus far!! Some rain but weather can be labeled "lovely." Speaking of labels: Label me "sentimental"!! I have been walking down memory lane and enjoying every minute. The weekend was spent with cousins.... (More details in a later blog.) I headed toward Elkhart, Indiana, on Monday morning and took a slight side trip to Fountain City, Indiana (near Richmond). I wanted to take pictures of Little Guy in front of the home of a first cousin, eight times removed. The Levi Coffin House is a historical landmark. Levi was known as the President of the Underground Railroad. He helped move fleeing slaves from the South to Canada. Very interesting life; very interesting story!!

Monday night was spent in the parking lot of a Super Walmart in Goshen, Indiana. It has the distinction of having a shelter for the horses, and buggies, while the Amish are shopping. (More pictures later.) All evening I heard the "clip clop" of horses hooves as they crossed the parking lot. All evening I watched the families push several shopping carts of groceries to their conveyance. I surmised that Monday evening must be the designated day for shopping.

Tuesday morning, I took Little Guy to the shop for repairs. Earlier today I visited... and saw the work in progress. I took pictures that I will post when I have time to write, and publish, complete information.

I'm keeping notes; there will be a lot of interesting details regarding my travels. Many pictures, too. For example: This morning I visited a "produce auction." The farmers bring their produce and the auctioneer rattles off the bid so fast I could hardly follow his jargon. The bell peppers were the most beautiful I've ever seen; the Indian Corn was so attractive; the pumpkins so large; the mums so colorful!! The apples and grapes were a delight to behold!! Here is a little barefoot Amish girl with pumpkins.

I'm staying with one of my Old German Baptist Brethren (OGBB) genealogy cousins. Always something to talk about! OGBB are a religious group similar to the Amish (similar because of Anabaptist beliefs but not so extreme that they live without electricity, telephones, cars, tractors, etc.). Here is my cousin with her great grandson (at the produce auction).

This blog is brief and intended to let the reader know that I am at my destination. I have traveled over 1000 miles. Some extra miles are attributed to miscellaneous trips in this area. Call them "pure pleasure." Yesterday, a cousin and I visited Mennohof and had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

Forty-eight hours after leaving Shelby, 600 miles from my apartment, I had a very refreshing shower at a TA truck stop. Many years ago I discovered that any traveler can take a shower at major truck stops. For a fee, of course. Today it was $10.00 but in the past I only paid $5.00 (inflation, I guess). Now I'll be very honest with you, I don't mind paying $10. for a shower!! They furnish towels and soap (and occasionally shampoo and conditioner). I refuse to pay mega-bucks at a KOA (and RV camp grounds) for the sole benefit of a shower. Management of RV camp grounds stubbornly insist that I have to pay for "full hookup" even though I assure them that I don't use "full hookup." (Six weeks ago I drove away from such an establishment that would not budge from $38.00.)

A very good day!! Nice clean body, shampooed hair, wearing a dress, I saw old haunts and conversed with friends and acquaint-ances. Lunch with cousins. I spent time at the Brethren Heritage Center in Brookville, Ohio. The major amount of my genealogy collection was donated to this library / archives / museum. They have expanded greatly since my last visit and I am so impressed with the facility and the work they are performing!! See the sign above my car? Through the door, down the stairs, and almost the entire basement of the strip-mall is climate controlled and devoted to "Brethren Heritage."

I meandered back roads and recalled the pleasant two years I spent in the vicinity. I was en route back to Panera, and Wal-Mart, when I suddenly saw a Harbor Freight store. I safely navigated into the parking lot and spent about an hour browsing. I haven't seen a Harbor Freight since I left Lancaster, California!! Yes, I made a small purchase of several small items for Little Guy.

I have a quiet corner in Panera and I'll be here for several hours!! I purchased a sandwich, and iced tea. While on the computer, I also have my cell phone charging. Free WiFi, delicious food, beautiful classical music, attractive environment.... What more could a gal ask for? [Prince Charming!!]

I'll be back in the Wal-Mart parking lot later tonight. I have a full day tomorrow: Church with one set of "cousins" in the morning and another set of "cousins" in the evening. (I'm related to these families but we're fourth and fifth cousins.)

The sleeping bag was warm and comfy when I crawled in at 9:00 PM Friday night. The trailer was a cool 59 degrees when I got up at 7:00 AM this Saturday morning. It was 57 degrees outside Little Guy as I walked across the Wal-Mart parking lot. I made a few purchases last night so did not linger in WM this morning. Washed my face, brushed my teeth, etc. I did not sleep well last night because noise from Interstate 75 all night. Strange noises in the parking lot, too, that I could not identify. ~~ I'm in Panera reading messages and enjoying my favorite whole grain bagel, veggie cream cheese, and Hazelnut coffee. It's a bright sunny morning!!

Tennessee, Kentucky & Ohio

Brutal honesty: I love the "back roads"; I hate the Interstates!! Here I am 23 hours later--at Panera in Dayton, Ohio (5:30 PM). Such a grueling day!! I actually spent the night in a Cracker Barrel parking lot (not WalMart) in Pigeon Forge, TN. I departed at 6:00 AM and was, essentially, traveling for ten and one-half hours. I covered 345 miles--and 33 mph is a very poor "average" for traveling the Interstates.

There were times of torrential rain followed by gray sky and sometimes a hint of sunshine. The Interstates, and weather, had a lot in common: A few miles were delightful, a few miles were stressful. There seems to be a lot of construction on Interstate 75 and sometimes we crept along at a snail's pace. The last ten miles into Dayton, Ohio, were the worst!! I was determined to get to this Panera but my body was screaming at me to pull off and get away from the construction and congestion. I didn't want to overheat the KIA so did not have the air conditioning on. (Beautiful weather in Ohio, probably 82 degrees.) I had the windows down. The fumes were so bad I was sneezing and had itchy, watery eyes. But, Praise the Lord!!, I'm here safe!!

I plan to spend the night in the WalMart parking lot less than a block away. Tomorrow I want to visit with some genealogy "cousins" and see the new features at the Brethren Heritage Center (in nearby Brookville, OH). Normally I would put links to names like Panera and Brethren Heritage Center. Not tonight!! ~~ I hope it doesn't sound like I am complaining. Just being brutally honest.

Great Smoky Mtns Nat'l Park & Pigeon Forge

We had rain all night but it ceased long enough for me to load a minimum of things into the KIA and Little Guy. I left at 11:11 and I thought that was a good sign because I am rather fanatical about a sequence of numbers for the time stamp on my blog: 2:22, 3:33, 4:44, etc. ~~ It is 6:30 PM and I am using WiFi at Atlanta Bread Company in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. I'm 200 miles from my apartment.

It was raining when I left my apartment but had weak sunshine thirty miles down the highway. Rain off and on all day!! While we had sunshine, I decided to leave I-40 for the drive through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. (My first time.) It was raining when I stopped at the Visitor's Center. I used a big umbrella for the first time!! (It is top quality at a Tuesday Morning bargain price!!) Extremely hard rain driving through the Park. Unlike my earlier travels on the Blue Ridge Parkway where very few vehicles were seen, in the Great Smoky's it was a continuous stream of traffic both directions. I had the thought that it looked like a funeral procession; everyone driving slowly, with their lights on.

Driving through Pigeon Forge was an experience!! There are thousands of classic cars parked in all the spaces close to the highway. Every strip mall, every motel, every hotel, every restaurant..., with every model imaginable. Vintage automobiles in mint condition!! What a sight!! Mile after mile of cars. Folding chairs were lined up on the grass between the parked cars and the street. I thought everyone was getting ready for a parade.

Having visited Pigeon Forge a year ago, I knew of Atlanta Bread Company (with WiFi). I didn't need to eat there (here) but wanted to inquire about the event. Last weekend and this coming weekend--and all week in between. Just imagine the tourist dollars that poured into this community!!

There's a Super WalMart about a mile down the highway. (I stayed there last year.) However, there is a large motorhome at the curb of Atlanta Bread Company. They appear to be there for the duration!! I might be able to spend the night right here?? I'll keep you informed of details regarding my trip.

Trimming Your Fuel Consumption: A Few Tips To Increase Your MPG

According to the department of energy, in 2008, the United States consumed roughly 137 billion gallons of gasoline. Of course, not all of that was used by your car (although I suspect the guy down the street from me is using more than his fair share) but let’s face it, anyone who drives a petroleum-fueled vehicle is a part of this problem. Gasoline has always been an odd thing to me. We take for granted that it will just be there, and be relatively cheap at that. We fill our tanks and drive off, but for the most part, never really think beyond that.

But of course there are ramifications to our petroleum addictions. Natural settings are destroyed and turned into oil fields. Young men and women are shipped across the world, and die protecting these oil fields. Pristine waters are ruined by oil tanker spills. Children the world over suffer from asthma attacks brought on in part by exhaust fumes. The list goes on and on, and beyond a small minority making a lot of money, it’s not a very good looking one.

So it seems like the least we can do is work towards using a little less, and eventually weaning ourselves off of oil completely. For now, maybe we can all start by consuming less and learning to make the petroleum we have go a little farther. You may have heard some of these ideas before, but if you are like most people, a little reminder never hurts.

Let go of your lead foot. Face it, gunning the engine to speed up and get to that next light where you’re still going to be waiting, isn’t doing anyone any good. Every time you pound on the gas pedal, you use more fuel than you need since the engine is working harder to quickly move that mass of metal you are riding in. Take it nice and easy, slowly get up to speed and slowly hit the brakes, maybe even coasting a bit in between. Studies show you can save up to 20% of your fuel by driving this way in city traffic, and as an added benefit, you won’t spill your coffee!

Kill the AC. OK, if you are living in the middle of the desert, this may not be a possibility, but let’s face it, not everyone needs the AC on all the time. When you hit that button, the engine needs to start driving the compressor, which requires more energy, which uses more fuel. Open those windows and let your hair down from time to time. Also, try to park in the shade so you don’t need the AC as much to begin with.

Inflate those tires. Remember when Obama said if everyone would simply check their tire pressure and make sure it was spot on, we’d save a heck of a lot of oil? Well, that may have gotten a few laughs, but it turns out he was right. Tires are designed to have a certain rolling resistance, and work best when properly inflated. Think about a tire that’s going flat. A lot more rubber is hitting the road right? Well, that translates to friction, which means the engine needs to work harder, which means, you guessed it, more fuel. Properly inflate your tires and you’ll see an increase of 1-2% in your gas mileage. Spread that across the nation and you’ve got a fair amount of conservation.

Drop the weight. Do you really need all the stuff you are carrying around in your trunk? Of course not. You shouldn’t be buying that case of bottled water anyway right? So why not clean out the car and shed a few pounds. Generally speaking, for every 100 pounds of weight, your vehicles mpg will decrease by 1%. Don’t have 100 pounds in the trunk? No sweat, 20 pounds will do and over time, will still add up. So ditch your collection of Victorian era bowling balls and leave it in the living room where it belongs.

Properly maintain your car. I know, we all do this right? Wrong. How many of you have checked your air filter recently? Fuel filter? Oil Filter? Timing? I could go on and on and I don’t even know my way around an intake manifold. Proper maintenance will keep your vehicle running efficiently and give you a crack at efficiency right off the bat. Think about just your air filter. If the engine needs to suck air through a sock that’s got 50,000 miles of road gunk on it, it’s going to have to strain to do so. Check these little guys regularly and keep your car happy.

Don’t think of your car as a climate controlled musical environment. How may times have you seen someone sitting in their car, windows up, engine running, talking on their cell phone? It’s shocking. Turn your car off and go sit under the tree over there, the one with the nice overhanging shade and the grass all around it. Yeah that one. Go ahead. It won’t hurt.

Turn your car into a planter bed. Probably the best piece of advice I can throw out there. DON’T DRIVE! Seriously. It’s the number one way to save on fuel - just stop using it in the first place. Now I know this isn’t the easiest thing for everyone out there to do (but if anyone has planted their Hummer I’d love a pic), but surely we can all make a concerted effort to drive less if not stopping completely. One thing I offer up in the seminar I teach is to take a map and draw a half-mile radius around your house. Then pledge to not drive anywhere within that radius unless you are coming or going to or from somewhere else. What this will do is significantly cut down those quick trips to the store that are so bad for your mpg. It’s not a major shift, but it will have an impact.

But the real answer to all of this, as far as I am concerned, is for all of us to get and ride a Conference Bike like the one in the video below. Come on, you know you love this. Just think, it’ll keep you in shape, slow us all down a bit, and make for better communication between friends and neighbors. Just look at how happy they all are! Conference Bikes, that’s the ticket.

Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels--Trip to Elkhart

I'm really in a quandary! Do I take one last long trip before it gets too cold?? Do I stay home and work on "down-sizing" my overabundance of "stuff"?? I can expedite the repair on Little Guy if I take it to Elkhart, Indiana. MapQuest indicates it is approximately 700 miles and would take "11 hours 32 minutes." (I drive slower than the average so I speculate two full days. I don't drive at night.) MapQuest suggests approximately $80. in gas (one way). ~~ I can visit genealogy "cousins," in Indiana and Ohio, on the return trip. Undoubtedly I will see beautiful autumn colors. ~~ Staying home is the "safe and sane" answer. But I bought Little Guy so I could see the country!! My immediate angst is having to reload a portion of the gear (not all, just a bare minimum). The mattress is so heavy (and I am so weak). As I write this, after a sleepless night, I don't have an answer.

I have been reading the messages here [Yahoo teardrop trailers] for awhile, but I have not posted before. I have been setting up my teardrop trailer, but have only started using it this summer.

Although I am pretty new to teardrops, I wrote up a road trip that I took this summer and, if it is OK with the group, during September, I would like to post my trip report here in installments.

Along the way I will be adding photos to the photo album: North Dakota teardrop road trip.

I am interested in feedback and discussion with the group and I would like to read about teardrop trips taken by others.

Road to Bottineau

I left Helena, Montana on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at about 10:30 AM. The purpose of the road trip was to pick up my wife in Wisconsin. She had gone there on the Amtrak passenger train, the "Empire Builder", to join her two sisters for a week. They needed to work out some of the property issues that were still outstanding since their father passed away late in 2008. Her train ride freed me up to make my own way from Montana to Wisconsin. For this trip, I intended to tow my teardrop trailer.

The objective that I had in mind was to drive through North Dakota on a few roads that I had never been over before, the northernmost highways, camping out along the way in my Little Guy Teardrop Camper/Trailer. I wanted to use my teardrop and confirm what I had been reading about on the Internet; that there really is a mountain range in North Dakota, and a nice one at that. I wanted to see that mountain range as well as a few of the surrounding towns like Bowbells, Bottineau and Belcourt. I had spent a lot of time setting up my teardrop, the trailer that I had named "Bismarck". I had my tools and my safety equipment ready. I had my camping gear laid out. Now I wanted to enjoy my teardrop trailer while I visited a less well-travelled part of North Dakota.

The immediate task at hand though was to pull my teardrop through downtown traffic in Bozeman, an eclectic, busy, Montana college town that is always chock full of vehicles and people, especially in the middle of the day. It would have been easy to drive right by Bozeman on Interstate 90, heading on to Columbus where I intended to spend the first night. But I had a taste for bagels, and as far as I am concerned, the best bagels in Montana are found at the BagelWorks at 708 West Main Street in Bozeman. This small restaurant / bagel shop is tucked in near a crowded intersection of narrow, misaligned streets. Pulling any trailer through these streets and downtown neighborhoods, even a small trailer like Bismarck, can be somewhat daunting. Negotiating these streets while pulling my teardrop would be worth it if I could obtain a bagel for lunch, plain or perhaps salted, nothing fancy though; my taste in bagels is fairly straightforward. I could get a cranberry bagel for an afternoon snack, and a poppy seed to have for a light supper. Crispy on the outside, soft but chewy throughout, always flavorful, BagelWorks bagels could motivate any kind of trailering within the tightest quarters of any town. So downtown Bozeman is where Bismarck and I started out for.

Bozeman is 100 highway miles from Helena, and my scenic drive through North Dakota began by travelling up the Missouri River on Highway 12, crossing the river bridge at Toston and then driving to the headwaters at Three Forks and the junction with Interstate 90. I headed east on the Interstate, but due to the likelihood of traffic congestion in Bozeman, I left I-90 at Belgrade and followed the two lane roads that lead into Bozeman. One advantage of my particular truck / teardrop combination is that the trailer is narrower than the pickup. I have become confident that if my tow vehicle will squeeze by, then my trailer, Bismarck, will follow (as my wife likes to say "riding-along, riding-along"). Ride-along it did, up the Gallatin River, past Belgrade, past Four Corners, past the turnoff to Montana State University, past the Mall and right onto Main Street in downtown Bozeman. I was headed for my favorite backstreet bagel shop: the BagelWorks.

High, Low, High

Granted, I was not pulling my trailer through the Loop in Chicago or along I-25 under construction in Denver, but Bozeman, Montana still had things to teach me about trailering in congested traffic. For example, even on narrow streets in town, it is still possible to widen my turns. I remember what was told to me by the driving instructors that I used to work with: use the lane lines. The instructors' mantra was summed up with "high, low, high". Effectively using the space between the lane lines will straighten out corners and make them more negotiable. The tactic is safe and works at higher speeds on winding highways, but it also works at slow speeds through tight turns. High, low, high. By taking my tow vehicle to the high side, the outside of the corner, then to the inside, or the apex of the corner, then back out a bit, I was confident that my teardrop would negotiate the corner without jumping the inside curb or coming too close to some green haired, iPod® toting college kid who happened to be standing nearby. As I eventually learned on this road trip, even the drive-through lane at MacDonald's is negotiable while pulling a teardrop trailer as long as you can straighten out your run at it. Mmm …good coffee.

Local Access Lanes

Everything is easier if you know your way around, and during the 1990's, I lived in Bozeman for several years. Knowledge of the area grants local access to shortcuts, especially the off-highway lanes that serve restaurants and shopping malls. Local access lanes usually lead to parking lots that are wide enough to turn around in with open space at the far end for unimpeded parking and an easy exit. Of course, it helps to know the individual town, but in most urban areas, the location of local access lanes seems to be somewhat predictable. In towns like Dickinson, Fergus Falls or St. Cloud, I have had good luck locating and utilizing these calmer roadways that are out of the main flow of heavy traffic.

Time-of-Day

Timing is a big part of this, and pulling a trailer through a town is almost always more convenient early in the morning or at mid-afternoon than it will be during the noon hour or around 5:00 PM. However, local knowledge counts here, too. Whenever a movie starts or ends at the Multi-Cineplex, for example, the parking lot at the Gallatin Valley Mall is usually packed and hard for any vehicle to manage, let alone a pick-up / teardrop combination. That rules out a trailer-toting, movie-time stop at the nearby Barnes and Noble Bookstore (nice bathrooms).

Blind Spots

You have to know your vehicle, too, especially the nature of the blind spots. In my own truck, one quick move of my head assures me that I will spot a passing vehicle that momentarily does not appear in any rearview mirror. I move my head a lot, and I do it deliberately. Starting with a quick look over my left shoulder, with specific checks as I turn back to the right, I am sure that I will see whatever is around me. By being deliberate, I have avoided some near-misses. So far, so good.

Around the Block

When towing my trailer, it seems to me that three or four turns of lesser consequence are usually more manageable than a single hard turn across a multi-lane road that is frequented by heavy, fast moving traffic. So I tend to drive around the block, and I still end up in the desired location. In town the default position is to stay in the right lane, but the more sophisticated goal is to use the traffic lanes in a manner that avoids any need to have to merge right or left while traveling within a congested area. Anticipate a merge, and set it up in advance. While keeping to the right in town, I watch out for immediate hazards such as drivers who are about to open their car doors to exit their vehicles, and I use the lane lines.

As tentative as I am about towing my teardrop, I tend to be willing to walk rather than try to park nearer to a local destination. But when I drove around the BagelWorks, I hit the teardrop jackpot. Behind the restaurant there was an open, double-sized parking space on the left hand corner of a one-way street, West Babcock. This is a peaceful, tree-shaded street just a block south of Main. There is a pleasant mixture of homes, apartments and small businesses, and this particular parking spot was less than 100 yards from the alley entrance to the shop. In no time, I had obtained a baker's half dozen of all my favorites and I was back in the truck for an easy merge into traffic. I was able to shortcut the primary business loop by keeping south, then jog back to catch an interchange onto I-90 eastbound. In no time I was making the interstate highway climb up to Bozeman Pass. With teardrops, and with bagels, straightforward is usually best.

(See September 6th for beginning of this series.) More on the theme of "Be Prepared." ~~ For one week I camped in deep grass at Tom Johnson Camping Center, Marion, NC. We had several days of hard rain!! ~~ I thought my Lewis & Clark "all weather outdoor foot-wear" paid for itself that week. On the box, the characteristics are listed as: 1) All weather grip soles, 2) moisture-wicking breathable lining, 3) 100% water-proof, flexible, and buoyant, 4) protective, full perimeter wrapped outsoles, and 5) stretch-fit, top binding to keep dirt and debris out. As I recall, about $15. from Sam's Club (I've had them for several years but I have a fairly accurate memory). That's "howIdoit".

Recently a friend told me about a new "discount" store in Shelby. (I thought I knew them all but one I didn't know about!!) She said "RV covers for $100. and car covers for $15.) Yesterday I browsed the establishment (like a Big Lots) and purchased the "mid-size" car cover. ~~ As you can see in the picture, the cover is large enough (and "small" might be too small). I did not cinch the cover; I was just testing to see if it would meet my needs. The fabric seems very sturdy and the information on the box says "triple layer fabric provides heavy duty protection against dirt, pollution and bad weather." It says "Three year warranty." (How could I go wrong with this pur-chase??) In small print: "This cover is designed to be water resistant but is not waterproof. It will not stop moisture from reaching the surface of your vehicle." ~~ Look, it has a zippered flap where the door is. ~~ That's "howIdoit". ~~ Yes, covers are available at Little Guy but I'm a Senior on a budget.

The traffic on I-85 was heavy. I was en route from Shelby to Concord, NC. There was a near "pile up" (around me) but I never saw an accident that might have prompted four lanes of traffic to come to a standstill. At the exit for Concord Mills Mall, cars were backed up from the signal to the Interstate. It was at least six signals before I was able to make my turn. Likewise six or seven signals before I was able to enter the Mall parking lot. Is it possible that people chose to stay home on Labor Day Weekend, and venture out the following weekend?? I did!!

Outdoor World was incredibly crowded with customers--or browsers!! I think that store covers five acres--it is incredibly huge. Everything for archery, camping, fishing, hunting, marine (boating), and RVs. It's fun to "browse."

Is the "recession" over? If traffic..., and stores full of customers, is any indication, the economy has turned the corner and recovery is on the horizon. Yes, I made a purchase at Outdoor World--and next door at Bed, Bath & Beyond. I did not browse the enormous Mall but noted that the corridors were full of people. Honestly, I don't "need" anything so why should I browse and perhaps be tempted by something!? Furthermore, (in my humble opinion) things are "too expensive"!! I'll continue to browse the Thrift Shops and make moderately-priced purchases.

At Outdoor World, I bought some collapsible poles that I hope I can use to erect an awning (with a tarp) extending from my little Teardrop trailer. I do not have the strength to set-up and fold-down an EZ-Up tent. I'm trying to "piece together" satisfactory items.

I was so embarrassed!! A knock on the door about 5:30 last night. When I opened the door, a well-dressed man--with a brief case--was standing there. "Mrs. Edwards?" ~ "Yes." ~ He is a life insurance salesman!! I did send a card... but expected information in the mail!!

My living room is crowded with all the things offloaded from the little Teardrop trailer!! I can't invite anyone into this mess!! I'm amazed at the amount of stuff I was hauling around!!

True to my word, today I hauled a trailer load (half load?) of things to a mission Thrift Shop. Mostly pillows, sheets and blankets... but kitchen, and a small analog TV, too. I am determined to "downsize"!!

My collection of aluminum, glass and plastic was delivered to the local recycling center. There is no provision for recycling at my apartment complex. I try to do my small part for the environment.

Oh, by-the-way, I sent the salesman away. I didn't invite him into the clutter.

During my travels with the Little Guy, I meet the nicest people!! One memorable couple was traveling in a motorhome--and parked adjacent to me at the Lake Powhatan campground near Asheville, North Carolina. They have returned home to Switzerland but we exchanged e-mail addresses and they continue to correspond with me. ~~ Another acquaintance--at Lake Powhatan--was walking his dog and stopped to chat and admire the "cute" little trailer. He called last week to tell me that (since our meeting) he bought a Little Guy. He called today to tell me about his first campout. ~~ While on my trip I received a phone call from a lady that lives in Asheville. She was in Canton, Ohio, to pick up her Little Guy--and the staff told her about me. Tentatively, we will camp together in the near future (we only live about eighty miles from one another).

Here I am ready to leave Little Guy International Headquarters, Canton, Ohio, March 28, 2008. Everyone was so gracious, and helpful!! I'm standing with the owner of the company, Joe Kicos.

At Tearjerkers there is a saying "Life moves a little slower on Teardrop time." All I think about lately is "teardrop"--and sleep is "slow" to find me!! So many sleepless nights!! I spent the last several hours working on this blog; look at the time-stamps: 2:22, 3:33, 4:44. (I wait patiently for those exact numbers.)

Yesterday, I emptied the large box on the tongue of the trailer. Too much stuff!! I had forgotten I had some of the items!! I'll eliminate some...; I'll do "Spring" house-cleaning in the "Fall."

The picture is deceiving; the "box" is not wider than the Little Guy. It was a "special order" (many months after I purchased the trailer) and I had no idea it would be "humongous"!! The storage space is good; the temptation to haul too much stuff is bad!! Half of the things were out when I remembered to take a picture. This is where I keep the electric cord, heater, fan, extra flash lights, tarps, Coleman propane stove, tea kettle, pans, food, etc. Also two heavy pieces of wood (wrapped in plastic) for under the dolly wheel if I am parked in grass. (Like Tom Johnson Rally Park, Marion, NC.)

(See September 6th for beginning of this series.) Security is another concern. Yes, there are locks on my door!! No, I do not carry a gun!! At one of the "As Seen on TV" shops (near Dolly-wood, Pigeon Forge, TN), I bought the "Big Red Button." It is five-and-one-half inches square and (indeed) has a big red button. It is powered by four C-size batteries. When I hit that button a loud piercing sound blasts forth!! That should be enough to scare away any would-be intruder!! If they continue to attempt entry, I will say: "I've got a weapon." I have a 15-inch metal Mag flashlight that holds four D-size batteries. I would swing that flashlight.

I plan my parking space at a WalMart. I may park one place until the desired space comes available. I "pull through" next to a shopping cart corral. I like to be directly under a parking lot light. Why the shopping cart corral? Because I don't want the idiot driver of the "sweeper truck" to crash into me!! Have you ever watched those guys sweep the parking lot?? (Maybe not because they do it in the middle of the night!!) They are frustrated NASCAR wanta-be!! They weave between vehicles like they are trying to thread a needle.

I worked for WalMart. I have some "insider" information (ha). I park on the "grocery entrance" side because that is the door that is unlocked during the night. I make a few purchases--and scout out the restrooms. ~~ When I see "No Overnight Parking" signs, I ask to speak to the Manager. They have never turned me away and often say they will have Security keep an eye on my car and trailer. That's "howIdoit".

When your trailer is not hitched to the car, be sure to use a "boot" on the tire. No one can steal your trailer with that attached!! Order from Little Guy.

Things that I do when solo camping:
* I never go to the bathhouse late at night - ever.
* Get your campsite ready for the night before nightfall hits (pick up food, clean dishes, etc.)
* Be aware of your surroundings!!! (scary looking shirtless guy camping in pickup truck)
* Don't act like a helpless lady.
* Keep your vehicle keys handy - not in your purse. You never know when you may have to hit that red panic button to set your car alarm off.
* Use Common Sense!
* Get to know the Park Ranger(s). Find out an emergency # for a Ranger.
* Tell the Ranger you are camping alone or if you are expecting visitors.

I know some of you have mixed feelings about carrying a concealed weapon but I always have (concealed weapons permit) and always will. But, it is for protection while traveling, especially alone and that's it.

So, I know a lot of the ladies have their own safety rules and I would love to hear them too.

Boy Scout motto: Be Prepared. Lady Teardrop motto: Be Prepared!

On the few occasions when I have needed a "jump start" I provided jumper cables. Frequently--when I asked for a "jump"--the other driver would say "I don't have cables." My reply: "No self respecting solo female would travel without cables!!" Mine are big and heavy. ~~ Recently I saw--and purchased--a very compact unit that (reportedly) does the same thing. It plugs into the cigarette lighter. I haven't used it yet but carries the Field & Stream brand. Should be good.

I have a warning light, too, in case I break down at night. However, I rarely drive at night!! Be prepared!! HowIdoit.

When I traveled back and forth across the U.S. in my Dodge mini-motorhome, I carried two tool boxes. With Little Guy, I try to keep things small and light weight.

When you are travel-ing, do you loose touch with day and date? I do!! The clock is wonderful because it is synchronized with a satellite. The time, day, and date is always accurate!! I love the thermometer because I'm able to keep track of temperature inside Little Guy. Take it outside for a few minutes and I have another number I can document in my travelogue. That's "howIdoit".

I have a 12-volt hair dryer (or windshield defroster) that plugs into the cigarette lighter. Also adapters so I can plug in my laptop (or curling iron?). ~~ The compact device to jump start the vehicle fascinates me. One end plugs into my KIA while the other end is plugged into another vehicle.

Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels--How-I-do-it--#1

Have you seen the TV program called "HowieDoIt" with Howie Mandel? The name is cute and I thought I'd borrow the idea for "how-I-do-it"--aka howIdoit.

In the process of stripping Little Guy naked--for the trip to Elkhart, Indiana--I recognized it was the ideal time to take pictures. My rational: pictures to accompany answers to the questions I frequently hear.

Number one question: "What do you do when 'Mother Nature' calls in the middle of the night?" Answer: I have a portable toilet "for emergencies." Otherwise I hike to the restrooms.

I paid $40. for this used (like new) from a Thrift Shop. Similar models are over $100. from the camping accessories department of the RV center. The two sections can be separated and the lower... carried to a dump station, or my bathroom when I return home. Fresh water can be kept in the top section--to flush--but "I don't." I have a quart-size plastic container of water and add a limited amount.

I use a deodorizer from an RV accessories store. I'm BIG on saving the environment so I use "Supreme Green." I paid a little over $10. for the small "12 Toss-Ins" package. However the "toss-in" is designed for 40-gallon waste holding tanks!! I carefully cut the corner of one toss-in and empty the contents into two small plastic containers. So I only use half a package!! No more than I use "Little John," this might be an unnecessary item and needless expense. However, this is "howIdoit." My toilet tissue is stored in a decorative tin. I never put soiled tissue in the toilet, I put it in a small sturdy plastic container with a screw tight lid.

I don't want any spills (highly unlikely!!) so I have "Little John" sitting on a heavy chamois in a heavy cardboard box. (See the orange chamois?) The towel discreetly hides Little John from the many visitors who want to see my cute little trailer.

There is a variety of "porta potties"--and some are less than $30. from WalMart. I've heard that a 5-gallon paint pail meets the needs of some teardroppers.

The second most frequently-asked question: "What about privacy? Don't people peek in?" As you read "howIdoit" you will see that I have utilized items that I already had at home, or found in a local Thrift Shop. I've used "Magic Shades" at night. Something I already had "because they were 'blue'" for my beautiful blue Dodge mini-motorhome. Little Guy Worldwide sells a shade that raises and lowers. I haven't found that Magic Shade blocks ventilation. Air comes in around the edges. My Little Guy has a vent on the roof so usually plenty of air.

I intentionally purchased the Little Guy "utility model." ~~ #1: Frequently I "do" Flea Markets and attempt to sell quality items I no longer need. ***I'm trying to "downsize"!!*** I can load an enormous amount of "stuff" into the trailer!! ~~ #2: I don't "need" a kitchen; I prefer to eat a big salad and fresh fruit and veggies. I have a one-burner Coleman propane stove so I can heat water for green tea, or a can of soup. I have an ice chest for perishibles.

The only time I stay in RV Parks is--prearranged--with a group. (Southern Gospel Singing at Tom Johnson Camping Center, Marion, NC, and Old Dominion Tearjerkers, Shenandoah Valley Campgrounds, Verona, VA.) At that time I pay the same price as the larger campers that utilize electricity, water, and sewer. Honestly, when I'm en route to a specific destination, I usually spend the night in a WalMart parking lot. I'm an expert at "primitive" camping!! It doesn't annoy me when I don't have utilities at State Parks and National Forest campgrounds!! If I wanted all the luxuries "of home" I'd "stay home"!!

I travel with a long electric extension cord. I could tuck it under the corner of the "hatch" if I needed to use a fan, or heater. (I travel with both.) I haven't needed a fan because it has not been "too hot" in the trailer at night. There was one campout--with Southern Appalachian Chapter TearJerkers--where I wish I had the little heater. My very first trip with Little Guy was in the Spring of 2008. I had the mattress and a sleeping bag (and the electric cord) but no extra blankets, no heavy coat, no heater. The weather had been very pleasant in Shelby so I didn't prepare for the higher elevation--and colder temperature--of the mountains at RiverCamp USA.

That's one reason I am writing this "howIdoit." One lady contacted me because she heard I traveled alone. This is her first experience with a trailer and the peculiarities of a "teardrop" trailer. (Example: Learning how to back one up!!)

Several months ago, at a store called Tuesday Morning, I bought a Portable Warming Blanket by Chill Buster. On the box it says "The ultimate heated sport utility blanket." It has a battery that we charge (at home) before we leave for a sporting event, or camping. I may never use it but it will be nice to have if the night turns cold and I don't have electricity. However, frankly, I am traveling with far more blankets than I will ever need. Also, sweatshirts, stocking cap, gloves, scarves, etc., that go with me year around!!

Some of the Teardrop trailers are so attractively decorated. I call mine "early attic." It started with the mustard-color (or is it "gold") twill bedspread that is over fifty years old. (Back when quality was standard in products. Probably made in one of the textile mills here in North Carolina!!) I covered the mattress with it and added pillowcases and towels with yellow, orange, tan, etc. ~~ I purchased the 3-inch foam mattress from a Thrift Shop. It has a heavy-duty plastic zippered cover. I believe it was designed for a hospital bed, on top of the existing mattress. It is very comfortable!!

In the summer, I only need a sheet over me at night. The yellow-flower twin sheet, and two matching pillow cases, came from a Thrift Shop. Likewise the orange and yellow stripe towel (that covers the "Little John"), and miscellaneous for decorative storage. For example, to maintain the color scheme, a blue sleeping bag is in a floral pillowcase. A black bag with "portable warming blanket" is in a tan pillow case (for contrast, ha!).

At this time last week, I promised pictures and details about the repair. (See Superfluous Information.) This week the manufacturer of Little Guy agreed to make the repairs. (They have the "know how"; the "handymen" were "flying blind"!!) The trailer is empty and awaits the trip to Elkhart, Indiana. Here are pictures of the water damage. The floor is "spongy" in the triangle. Mold is as high as the tuna can is tall. To the right of the black bracket, there is a hole in that lower right corner. The tail light is "wobbly" again. (Short message, sweet resolution!!)

3:33 AM, I couldn't sleep; I checked my e-mail. The following had arrived (from Simple Truths) since I checked the e-mail less than an hour earlier.

Not long ago, I received a letter from one of our customers. She said, "Mac, I love getting your newsletter and had to send you this beautiful story. I don't know who wrote it, but I hope you can find a way to share it with your customers."

I did love it, and thought it would be a great ending to my book titled, Charging the Human Battery. It's called: 3,900 Saturdays.

The older I get, the more I enjoy Saturday morning. Perhaps it's the quiet solitude that comes with being the first to rise, or maybe it's the unbounded joy of not having to be at work. Either way, the first few hours of a Saturday morning are most enjoyable.

A few weeks ago, I was shuffling toward the garage with a steaming cup of coffee in one hand and the morning paper in the other. What began as a typical Saturday morning turned into one of those lessons that life seems to hand you from time to time. Let me tell you about it:

I turned the dial up into the phone portion of the band on my ham radio in order to listen to a Saturday morning swap net. Along the way, I came across an older sounding chap, with a tremendous signal and a golden voice. You know the kind; he sounded like he should be in the broadcasting business. He was telling whomever he was talking with something about "a thousand marbles." I was intrigued and stopped to listen to what he had to say.

"Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you're busy with your job. I'm sure they pay you well but it's a shame you have to be away from home and your family so much. Hard to believe a young fellow should have to work sixty or seventy hours a week to make ends meet. It's too bad you missed your daughter's dance recital," he continued; "Let me tell you something that has helped me keep my own priorities." And that's when he began to explain his theory of a "thousand marbles."

"You see, I sat down one day and did a little arithmetic. The average person lives about seventy-five years. I know, some live more and some live less, but on average, folks live about seventy-five years.

Now then, I multiplied 75 times 52 and I came up with 3,900, which is the number of Saturdays that the average person has in their entire lifetime. Now, stick with me, Tom, I'm getting to the important part.

It took me until I was fifty-five years old to think about all this in any detail," he went on, "and by that time I had lived through over twenty-eight hundred Saturdays. I got to thinking that if I lived to be seventy-five, I only had about a thousand of them left to enjoy. So I went to a toy store and bought every single marble they had. I ended up having to visit three toy stores to round up 1,000 marbles. I took them home and put them inside a large, clear plastic container right here in the shack next to my gear.

Every Saturday since then, I have taken one marble out and thrown it away. I found that by watching the marbles diminish, I focused more on the really important things in life.

There's nothing like watching your time here on this earth run out to help get your priorities straight.

Now let me tell you one last thing before I sign off with you and take my lovely wife out for breakfast. This morning, I took the very last marble out of the container. I figure that if I make it until next Saturday then I have been given a little extra time. And the one thing we can all use is a little more time.

It was nice to meet you Tom. I hope you spend more time with your family, and I hope to meet you again here on the band. This is a 75 year old man, K9NZQ, clear and going QRT, good morning!"

You could have heard a pin drop on the band when this fellow signed off. I guess he gave us all a lot to think about. I had planned to work on the antenna that morning, and then I was going to meet up with a few hams to work on the next club newsletter.

Instead, I went upstairs and woke my wife up with a kiss. "C'mon honey, I'm taking you and the kids to breakfast."

"What brought this on?" she asked with a smile.

"Oh, nothing special, it's just been a long time since we spent a Saturday together with the kids. And hey, can we stop at a toy store while we're out? I need to buy some marbles."

My heart is heavy because I mourn for the families of the two who died, and the many families who lost their homes.

Want a forest experience?
That’s what we were asked by a Forest Service employee the other day. You see, we generally call about a week head to make our appointment with the District folks. Even though we have selected a campground to stay at, Fred or I will ask if there is a campground they would suggest. Generally, the answer is vague but this Forest Service person responding with, “Do you want a forest experience?”

Fred grinned and said, “That’s what we prefer.”

To which, she suggested not a Forest Service campground but a State Park near the District office!

Okay, that State Park is more convenient to the Forest’s district office but . . .

Well, the whole thing got me thinking about what exactly is a “forest experience”? Are trees required? Can you have a “forest experience” in a grassland or in a place with no tree? Are smelling vaults (pit toilets) required? Must you be in a tent or is it possible to have a “forest experience” in a motorhome? Is a “forest experience” only achieved in a wilderness area or can you have one in an urban forest setting with little or no privacy between campsites?

I think the answer to all these questions is yes, except for the smelling vault. In my opinion, smelling vaults are not a requirement thanks to the installations of SST (Sweet Smelling Toilets) and compositing vaults.

For me, a “forest experience” can be enjoyed in a tent in the backyard or in a motorhome far from everything. Electric power is not required but there should be a star-studded night sky, a natural quiet that comes from inside you as well as from all around, and pleasure in the simplest of things like a perfectly roasted marshmallow or a visit from a furry woodland critter.

Yep, IMHO you can have a “forest experience” in your backyard, in a city park, county park, state park, national park, maybe in a private campground (but none I can think of) and certainly in any National Forest. You don’t need any fancy equipment, multi-room tent, expensive cook stove, or special gourmet food. You just need to get out where things grow and critters walk, crawl, flutter, and fly. Your stay doesn’t have to be long. A two mile hike is a good introduction for a “forest experience.”

But be warned - it is a good thing that can be habit forming.

Do I want a “forest experience”? After fifteen years of researching, visiting , surveying, camping, and spending upwards of 180 days each year eating, sleeping, and thinking about national forests, that answer is a definite YES! The more important question is, “Do you want to join me in a forest experience?”

Why swine flu vaccines just don't add up: Doing the (fuzzy) math

(NaturalNews) Here's a seventh grade word problem for you: If swine flu has infected one million people and killed 500, how many people might be expected to die if it infects 150 million people (assuming no major changes in the virus)? The correct answer, of course, is 75,000 people, and that's within the range of the number of swine flu deaths now being publicly predicted by the White House.

But there's another part to this word problem: How many vaccine shots and hand washings does it take to boost vitamin D levels in the average person?

The question, of course, makes no sense. Vaccine shots don't boost vitamin D levels any more than eating pork infects you with swine flu. So why is the official advice on swine flu protection essentially limited to "wash your hands, get your vaccine shot and cough into your elbow?" (Seriously. I'm not making this up.)

The Associated Press has distilled swine flu advice to "10 things you need to know." None of those ten things include boosting your nutrition, getting more vitamin D or taking anti-viral medicinal herbs. They do, however, include hilarious explanations like "If you develop breathing problems, pain in your chest, constant vomiting or a fever that keeps rising, go to an emergency room."

Emergency room in a pandemic?
Whatever for? They don't bother to mention that in a pandemic scenario that strikes you with constant vomiting, the entire emergency room is likely to be overrun with other people joining you in a hospital room vomit fest.

Nor do they mention some other important math: The very limited number of anti-viral medication courses available in the U.S. The last time I checked, that was roughly 50 million courses. If the U.S. population is roughly 300 million people, and there are 50 million courses of anti-viral meds available, how many Americans will have no access to those meds? (Ahem... 250 million people...)

Here's an even more interesting brain buster for you: If each vaccine shot generates $25 in revenue for drug companies, and the U.S. government orders the production of 160 million vaccines, how much money is Big Pharma making off the pandemic? That answer is roughly $4 billion in net revenues.

But even that doesn't count all the repeat business from the future victims who suffer neurological side effects from the vaccines and have to be institutionalized and subjected to high-dollar medical care for years on end. In all, a mass vaccination program could end up generating over ten billion dollars in revenues for drug companies.

These numbers just don't add up
Now let's look at some serious statistics: If one million people have already been infected with swine flu, and 500 have died, that's a fatality rate of 1 out of 2000 people. Depending on which research you believe, vaccines might at most be credited with preventing 1% of flu deaths during any given flu season (and that's being very generous to the vaccine). So here's the question:

How many people have to be vaccinated with the new swine flu vaccine to save ONE life from a swine flu fatality?

(Notice, carefully, this question has never been asked in the mainstream media. That's because the answer isn't exactly what most people want to hear...)

This question is easy to answer, actually. If the vaccine were 100% effective (that is, they prevented every death that would have otherwise occurred), they could be credited with saving 1 life out of 2000, right? Because that's the normal death rate for this particular virus (these figures are widely quoted by AP, Reuters and the White House, by the way).

But no vaccine is 100% effective. As I mentioned above, seasonal flu vaccines might -- at a stretch -- be credited with preventing 1% of the deaths that might otherwise have occurred. With this 1% effectiveness factor calculated back into the formula for swine flu (assuming the same 1% effectiveness factor), it turns out that you would have to vaccinate 200,000 people to save ONE life from swine flu.

That puts a whole new perspective on the vaccine push, doesn't it? 200,000 vaccines costs taxpayers roughly $5,000,000, and it subjects 200,000 people to the potential side effects of these vaccines which have never been subjected to any long-term testing whatsoever.

It all begs the question: Is it really worth it?

Is it worth spending $5 million and exposing 200,000 people to potentially dangerous vaccine side effects in order to prevent ONE death from swine flu? And why isn't anybody breaking down the numbers on this issue and providing a serious cost / benefit analysis as I'm doing here?

Let's be generous to the vaccine...
Vaccine pushers might argue that the vaccine is far more than 1% effective at preventing swine flu deaths. In their wildest dreams, they might imagine a death reduction rate of, say, a wildly optimistic 10%. But even considering that, is it worth it? If the vaccine stops 10% of deaths that would have otherwise occurred, that still means you'd have to vaccinate 200,000 people to prevent the deaths of ten people.

I'm going to throw out a wild guess here and suggest that far more than 10 people will be killed by the vaccine itself, completely nullifying any net reduction in total deaths. Mathematically, you see, mass swine flu vaccinations make absolutely no sense given the very low rate of fatalities being observed right now.

Pat Robertson Recovering from Successful Heart Surgery

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (AUGUST 31, 2009) – The Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) announced today that its founder and Chairman, Pat Robertson, has returned home after extensive heart surgery at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, NC. Mr. Robertson has suffered a condition known as atrial fibrillation, an often-debilitating heart disorder involving shortness of breath and weakness affecting an estimated five million Americans.

In the recent procedure, which required ten hours of surgery, cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Andy C. Pat Robertson celebrated his 79th birthday on March 22nd of this year. At that time, the Board of Directors of CBN appointed his son, Gordon Robertson, a former Norfolk attorney, to lead The Christian Broadcasting Network as its Chief Executive Officer.

Robertson expects to return to a full schedule, including hosting The 700 Club, in several weeks.

We have all witnessed quite a show since Barack Obama became president. Because the country was facing "crisis" after "crisis," Obama and his team were more than happy to inject government into the private operations of banks, the auto industry, and energy sector.

But, of course, that's not enough. Now with the latest cybersecurity bill making its way through Congress, Obama not only will have control over General Motors but could also have control over the Internet. With the power to "shut down online traffic by seizing private networks," Obama would take one more piece of freedom and add it to his growing list of industries and activities which fall under government "supervision."

As noted in the report on FOXNews.com, "A Senate bill would offer President Obama emergency control of the Internet and may give him a 'kill switch' to shut down online traffic by seizing private networks -- a move cybersecurity experts worry will choke off industry and civil liberties."

New details of the Cybersecurity Act of 2009 were released on Thursday "months after an initial version authored by Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.V., was blasted in Silicon Valley as dangerous government intrusion."

Larry Clinton, president of the Internet Security Alliance, told FOXNews.com that the original bill gave Obama the power to turn off the Internet in the case of a cyber-emergency. (Sounds like another potential "crisis" to me.) Of course, as Clinton comments, the bill does not define what a cyber-emergency is.

In an excerpt of the bill obtained by CNET News, the legislation "still appears to permit the president to seize temporary control of private-sector networks during a so-called cybersecurity emergency."

The new version would allow the president to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" relating to "non-governmental" computer networks and do what's necessary to respond to the threat. Other sections of the proposal include a federal certification program for "cybersecurity professionals," and a requirement that certain computer systems and networks in the private sector be managed by people who have been awarded that license.

CNET's translation? -- "If your company is deemed 'critical,' a new set of regulations kick in involving who you can hire, what information you must disclose, and when the government would exercise control over your computers or network."

Here's the kicker... not only would this bill put more private industry under the supervision of the government, but once again, the government is showing that it has no grasp of what actually goes on in private industry.

The Rockefeller proposal plays out against a broader concern in Washington, D.C., about the government's role in cybersecurity. In May, President Obama acknowledged that the government is "not as prepared" as it should be to respond to disruptions and announced that a new cybersecurity coordinator position would be created inside the White House staff. Three months later, that post remains empty, one top cybersecurity aide has quit, and some wags have begun to wonder why a government that receives failing marks on cybersecurity should be trusted to instruct the private sector what to do.

At the risk of stating the obvious, the government should stick to those specific functions outlined by the Constitution and stay out of private industry. Obama and his team continue to seize more control over our private lives, but with each passing day, they also show that they are ill-equipped to handle the situation. The last thing we need is more government control over the Internet and Obama telling cyber-professionals how to do their jobs.

I don't want Obama patrolling my inbox with "professionals" licensed by his administration. Do you?

For a late afternoon lunch, I enjoyed lightly steamed asparagus. It was so delicious!! I didn't eat earlier because I was exploring a number of forums at Teardrops and Tiny Travel Trailers. I couldn't tear ("tare") myself away!! I read dozens of posted messages, and submitted my "two cents worth" to a couple of topics. The amount of information is overwhelming!! Everything the Teardrop owner (or wanta be) needs to know!! I also checked the Tearjerkers web site hoping to find campouts. ~~ I subscribed to Tales & Trails.

Superfluous info: I was stung by a wasp this afternoon. They were building a nest under the eves near my front door. I gave the nest a couple of whacks with a broom handle--and ran. But I didn't run fast enough!! One angry wasp stung me on the top of my head. Yes, it hurts. It is affecting my left eye but I'm confident that I am OK, and will be OK.

This afternoon, a two-man team looked at my Teardrop Trailer repair project. They promised to return next Saturday, at 8 AM, and correct the problem. If all goes well, at this hour seven days from now I will report details and post pictures.

I had been toying with the idea of a short trip to a Fiddler's Convention for the holiday weekend. I rarely travel... but thought I might make an exception. This means I'll be home--and that's OK.

10:00 PM Postscript: Did I say Fiddler's Convention?? Totally unexpected, the music came to me this evening via UNC-TV (Public Broadcasting). I had a "front row" seat (so to speak) at Fiddler's Grove. ~~ Confession: I'm having to acquire an appreciation for "mountain music" and bluegrass. I was raised in California, and Oregon, and never heard it. Now I live in North Carolina and want to "hear" the sounds as well as "see" the sights.

Stone Mountain, Georgia

I **love** to watch UNC-TV (Public Broadcasting) programs regarding scenic interests in North Carolina. Because of them, I visited Grandfather Mountain, and Mount Airy. Last night I learned of Stone Mountain Park, Georgia. As God is my witness, I had **never** heard of the carving on the mountain. We all know about Mount Rushmore but how many know of Stone Mountain?? Wikipedia has all the details!!

I'm not a "Theme Park" person but I am intrigued by the carving, and the museum. I'm more interested in the camping, and hiking. This destination is going on my "to do" travel list. Approximately 209 miles from Shelby.

Thousands crowded the area outside the Today Show studio, packed Rockafeller Center, and many blocks beyond. Countless millions watched on TV. What was the attraction? Miley Cyrus!! ~~ Personally, I left the apartment before the concert; I went shopping for a few necessities--including organic fruit and veggies. During the 30 mile drive to Gastonia, I listened to Christian music and an inspirational message (on the radio). 'Nuf said?!

No exaggeration: I spent about two hours in Lowe's searching for "just the right" items for a repair on the Little Guy Teardrop trailer. More about the physical repair in a later message. Meanwhile, a caveat: Don't neglect weather stripping and allow water damage!! ~~ I now own a large heavy-duty tarp that I will use to cover Little Guy for the winter. But that doesn't address the problem of our frequent heavy rains--during the summer--when I am "between trips."

Yes, I do "home repairs"--and trailer repairs. However, this project calls for someone with tools and "know how" that I don't have. Two weeks ago a self-proclaimed expert on Teardrops looked at the project and said he would be back the next day. Eight days went by and I didn't hear from him. I called... and he said he'd been sick. He'd be here the next day with everything needed. That was four days ago!! ~~ Several days ago I searched the local phone book, and newspaper ads, for a "handyman." I called three... but only one returned my call.

What happened to honesty and integrity over the last few decades?? Why is a "senior" lady ignored?? I've always given more than was required. I've marched to a different drummer.

Wake Up, America: Forced vaccinations, quarantine camps, health care interrogations and mandatory "decontaminations"

This bill suspends virtually all Constitutional rights of Massachusetts citizens and forces anyone "suspected" of being infected to submit to interrogations, "decontaminations" and vaccines.

It's also sets fines up to $1,000 per day for anyone who refuses to submit to quarantines, vaccinations, decontamination efforts or to follow any other verbal order by virtually any state-licensed law enforcement or medical personnel. Here's some of the language contained in the bill:

(Violation of 4th Amendment: Illegal search and seizure)

During either type of declared emergency, a local public health authority... may exercise authority... to require the owner or occupier of premises to permit entry into and investigation of the premises; to close, direct, and compel the evacuation of, or to decontaminate or cause to be decontaminated any building or facility; to destroy any material; to restrict or prohibit assemblages of persons;

(Violation of 14th Amendment; illegal arrest without a warrant)

...an officer authorized to serve criminal process may arrest without a warrant any person whom the officer has probable cause to believe has violated an order given to effectuate the purposes of this subsection and shall use reasonable diligence to enforce such order. [Gunpoint]

(Government price controls)

The attorney general, in consultation with the office of consumer affairs and business regulation, and upon the declaration by the governor that a supply emergency exists, shall take appropriate action to ensure that no person shall sell a product or service that is at a price that unreasonably exceeds the price charged before the emergency.

"Involuntary Transportation" (also known as kidnapping)

Law enforcement authorities, upon order of the commissioner or his agent or at the request of a local public health authority pursuant to such order, shall assist emergency medical technicians or other appropriate medical personnel in the involuntary transportation of such person to the tuberculosis treatment center.

$1,000 / day in fines

Any person who knowingly violates an order, as to which noncompliance
poses a serious danger to public health as determined by the commissioner or the local public health authority, shall be punished by imprisonment for not more than 30 days or a fine of not more than one thousand dollars per day that the violation continues, or both.

Forced vaccinations

Furthermore, when the commissioner or a local public health authority within its jurisdiction determines that either or both of the following measures are necessary to prevent a serious danger to the public health the commissioner or local public health authority may exercise the following authority: (1) to vaccinate or provide precautionary prophylaxis to individuals as protection against communicable disease...

Forced quarantine for those who refuse (illegal imprisonment without charge)

An individual who is unable or unwilling to submit to vaccination or treatment shall not be required to submit to such procedures but may be isolated or quarantined pursuant to section 96 of chapter 111 if his or her refusal poses a serious danger to public health or results in uncertainty whether he or she has been exposed to or is infected with a disease or condition that poses a serious danger to public health, as determined by the commissioner, or a local public health authority operating within its jurisdiction.

Arrest for refusal to be "decontaminated"

If an individual is unable or unwilling to submit to decontamination or procedures necessary for diagnosis, the decontamination or diagnosis procedures may proceed only pursuant to an order of the superior court... During the time necessary to obtain such court order, such individual may be isolated or quarantined pursuant to section 96 of chapter 111 if his or her refusal to submit to decontamination or diagnosis procedures poses a serious danger to public health or results in uncertainty whether he or she has been exposed to or is infected with a disease or condition that poses a serious danger to public health.

Interrogation

When the commissioner or a local public health authority within its jurisdiction reasonably believes that a person may have been exposed to a disease or condition that poses a threat to the public health, in addition to their authority under section 96 of chapter 111, the commissioner or the local public health authority may detain the person for as long as may be reasonably necessary for the commissioner or the local public health authority, to convey information to the person regarding the disease or condition and to obtain contact information... If a person detained under subsection (1) refuses to provide the information requested, the person may be isolated or quarantined pursuant to section 96 of chapter 111 if his or her refusal poses a serious danger to public health...

Forced isolation and quarantine

An order for isolation or quarantine may include any individual who is unwilling or unable to undergo vaccination, precautionary prophylaxis, medical treatment, decontamination, medical examinations, tests, or specimen collection and whose refusal of one or more of these measures poses a serious danger to public health or results in uncertainty whether he or she has been exposed to or is infected with a disease or condition that poses a serious danger to public health.

Forced entry into any home or building...

There's a lot more in this bill, including language that allows Mass. police to enter any home or building without a search warrant, to destroy any object or building they suspect may pose a threat to public safety, to order the closing and / or decontamination of any facility using highly toxic chemical decontamination agents, and to arrest, detain and interrogate anyone who gets in their way.

Meanwhile, all state law enforcement and medical personnel are granted complete immunity from prosecution for their part in violating your Constitutional rights. So if they violate your right to due process, or they accidentally destroy your home, or they kill your family dog because they suspect it might be infected, you have absolutely zero recourse.

Under this bill, Massachusetts becomes a medical police state. There is no debating it. It's all written, clear as day, in this law: The citizens of Massachusetts will have no rights, period. The Constitution is ancient history. You are now the property of the State.

Kiss your freedoms goodbye.

Setting the people up to die: A conspiracy of silence about swine flu natural remedies

(NaturalNews) It's emblazoned across the front page of USA Today, just underneath a subhead declaring Michael Jackson was, indeed, killed by a drug overdose: "Flu could infect half of USA." The article goes on to describe the predicted number of deaths expected in the U.S. (30,000 - 90,000 Americans) as well as the actions being taken by the government to protect Americans from the coming swine flu pandemic.

That advice reads sort of like a comic book of health care advice for kindergarteners: Wash your hands, cover your mouth if you cough and let "the grownups" take care of the rest by injecting you with a vaccine. Curiously absent from all the health advice being handed out on the swine flu by the White House, the CDC, the WHO and even the FDA is any mention of Vitamin D or other natural remedies that offer enormous protections from influenza infections.

The absence of this information from virtually all the advice being handed out to the American public is increasingly suspicious. If a pandemic flu is, indeed, threatening to infect half the U.S. population, and if most of the population is deficient in a nutrient known to strongly prevent influenza infections, wouldn't it make good sense to make a few announcements encouraging Americans to raise their vitamin D levels throughout the coming winter?

It is a well-known medical fact, of course, that influenza always gets worse during the winter months North of the equator and the summer months South of the equator (which are really called their "winter" months). This is because as sunlight hours lessen during the winter, the people living there become vitamin D deficient and are susceptible to influenza infections of all kinds.

The information resources backing this are easy to find. Downsizing

Finally fell asleep. I'm wide awake and I've had a productive morning. I've loaded a lot of things into the KIA to take to a Thrift Shop. I've been hanging on to the things--for sale at local Flea Markets--but things are not selling. It just doesn't make sense (any more) to load the KIA, and trailer; get up early (after a sleepless night?!); drive to..., set up, endure the heat, tear down, drive home.... The last two times I didn't even sell enough to pay for the space!! ~~ Much more to load--to "downsize"--but that's for another day and another trip. I believe it was Confucius that said "The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step."

In this age of "instant everything" I thought things worked in "real time"--especially the Internet. I couldn't figure out the mechanics of WebRing (why it wouldn't work for me) so I focused on other things this morning. Now (in the heat of the afternoon) I clicked "next" and "previous" on the WebRing logo (at the top of the blog) and it took me to the various subscribers. It's working!! Now I need to make some changes on my blog to accommodate this new feature. I love the challenges of preparing a blog, and maneuvering on the Internet!!!!

Inherited risk helps explain why some smokers live until they’re 95 and others, like my mother and her sister, die of lung cancer in their sixties. Someday, genetic tests may be used routinely to assess a person’s risk of specific cancers. But I don’t want to wait for that. I want to do whatever I can to lower my risk. Now.

So I called Melanie Polk, a dietitian and director of nutrition education at the American Institute for Cancer Research, and she told me the same thing I would hear from almost every expert, alternative or mainstream, including the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society. “Eat more fruits and vegetables. That’s the single most important step most people can take to lower their cancer risk.”
