Adult obesity rose in 23 states last year, a new study finds;
almost one-third of kids are overweight as well
By Catherine Arnst
Americans are getting fatter, portending massive costs for the health-care system in general and Medicare in particular. Adult obesity rates increased in 23 U.S. states last year and did not fall in a single state, an annual survey released on July 1 found. Adult obesity rates now exceed 25% in 31 states, up from 28 states last year and 19 the year before that.
The problem appears destined to continue worsening, too, the report indicates. Among children 10-17, about 30% are overweight or obese in 30 states, says the survey, which also examined youth this time around. Study after study has found that overweight children are more likely to become obese as adults, and obese children are almost certain to remain that way. "There is a huge wave of obese adults coming that will bankrupt us as a nation unless we get this under control now," said Dr. James S. Marks, senior vice-president of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The survey, titled F as in Fat: How Obesity Problems Are Failing in America, was conducted by the nonprofit organizations Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It depicts a disconcerting increase in a condition that, when combined with attendant risks such as diabetes and heart disease, make up the most expensive burdens on the nation's health-care system.
The researchers noted that overweight people tend to live as long as the thin, but with far more chronic diseases that are costly to treat. "How are we going to compete with the rest of the world if our economy and workforce are weighed down by bad health," said Jeff Levi, executive director of Trust for America's Health.
In 49 States, 1 in 5 Is Obese
The researches did see a slim sign of hope, in that only 23 states showed an increase in obesity rates this year, compared with 37 with higher rates in last year's survey. Still, the report found that two-thirds of U.S. adults are now considered overweight or obese, as determined by their body-mass index, a measure of weight in relation to a person's height. The survey also found that four states have obesity rates above 30%: Mississippi (32.5%), West Virginia (31.2%), Alabama (31.1%), and Tennessee (30.2%).
Adult obesity rates now exceed 20% in 49 states plus the District of Columbia. Only Colorado, where 18.9% of the population is obese, falls below the 20% mark. Still, in 1991, no state had an obesity rate above 20%.
Adult obesity rates increased in 19 states in the past year, to the point where more than 10% of the population in seven states now has type 2 diabetes. More than 20 million adult Americans now have diabetes, and prevalence of the disease has doubled over the past 10 years, from 4.8 people per 1,000 to 9.1 per 1,000. A further 57 million Americans are pre-diabetic, which means they are at high risk and likely to develop the disease in 5 to 10 years.

Our Bodies Were Designed To Be Healthy

Dear Lorraine,
OUR BODIES WERE DESIGNED TO BE HEALTHY.
We were designed to be energetic--even slender.
We were intended to have smooth, supple skin and a quick, alert mind.
Instead we are overweight. We are tired and sluggish. Two out of three of us will die from cancer or heart disease.
WHY?
Dr. Robert O. Young's New Biology(R), most simply stated, is that the over acidification of the body is the single underlying cause of all disease.
In contrast, the old biology, based on the work of Louis Pasteur in the late 1800's, stems from the idea that disease comes from germs which invade the body from the outside. Dr. Young has found that when the body is in healthy alkaline balance, germs are unable to get a foothold.
Think of your body as a fish tank. Think of the importance of maintaining the integrity of the internal fluids of the body that we "swim" in daily.Imagine that the fish in this tank are your cells and your organ systems are bathed in fluids which transport food and remove wastes.
Now imagine we back up a car and put the tailpipe up against the air intake filter that supplies the oxygen for the water in the tank. The water becomes filled with carbon monoxide, lowering the alkaline pH, creating and acidic pH environment, and threatening the health of the "fish," your cells and organs.
What if we throw in too much food or the wrong kind of food (acid-producing food like dairy, sugar, and animal protein) and the fish are unable to consume or digest it all, and it starts to decompose and putrefy? Toxic acid waste and chemicals build up as the food breaks down, creating more acidic byproducts, altering the optimum alkaline pH.
Would you change the water or treat the fish? Our present traditional medical system says that you treat the fish!!!!! You cut on the fish. Surgery. You burn the fish. Radiation. You poison the fish. Toxic drugs and pharmaceuticals.
Basically, this fish tank example is a small example of what we may be doing to our internal fluids every day. We are fouling them with pollution, smoking, drugs, excessive intake of food, over-consumption of acid-forming foods, and any number of transgressions which compromise the delicate balance of our internal alkaline fluids.
Some of us have fish tanks (bodies) that are barely able to support life, yet we somehow manage to struggle from day to day, building more sever imbalances until there is the inevitable crash and debilitating chronic, disturbing and disorganizing symptoms to deal with.
The pH level (the acid-alkaline measurement) of our internal fluids affects every cell in our bodies. Extended acid imbalances of any kind are not well tolerated by the body. Indeed, the entire metabolic process depends on a balanced internal alkaline environment.
A chronically over-acidic pH corrodes body tissue, slowly eating into the 60,000 miles of veins and arteries like acid eating into marble. If left unchecked, it will interrupt all cellular activities and functions, from the beating of your heart to the neural firing of your brain. In summary, over-acidification interferes with life itself leading to all sickness and disease!

The Thrive Diet: The Whole Food Way to Lose Weight, Reduce Stress, and Stay Healthy for Life
by Brendan Brazier. Lorraine here with three short paragraphs copied from a summary of the book. Click here to read in its entirety.
Many, if not all, of our modern-day health problems are caused by stress. Obesity, fatigue, mental fog, sleep disturbances, digestive problems, prematurely wrinkled skin, depression, and many others.
Stress, including not being adequately nourished, results in the accumulation of body fat.
The Thrive Diet is based on nutrient-rich whole foods. Their nutritional stress-reduction properties will help you spend more time in the delta phase of sleep and help you achieve an ideal body weight. Eating only nutrient-rich foods will lead to permanent lower body fat.
It should be apparent that I love the Health Ranger, Mike Adams, NaturalNews.com. I receive many health-related e-mails every day, and I search links frequently. I consistantly read what Mike publishes!!
