Eating Out? 10 Diet-Busting Restaurant Dishes

These Calorie Bombs Sound Healthy, But They're Not
By Jill Weisenberger, MS, RD, CDE, LifeScript Nutrition Expert

That turkey burger on the menu sounds healthy – a portion of protein with veggies on the side. Surprise… it’s a ticking calorie bomb! Read on for the top 10 diet-busters at your favorite chain restaurants. Then test how much you know about staying lean when dining out…

Restaurants are a dieter’s downfall. For one thing, meal portions have ballooned (and so have we). Foods are frequently sautéed, stir-fried or simmered in gobs of butter or oil. Even foods that sound healthy can be laced with hidden fat, sugar and salt.

Here are 10 of the most fattening dishes at your favorite chains, based on information from nutrition experts and restaurants themselves:

1. Turkey and Veggie Burgers
These only sound healthy. Sure, veggies are low in fat. So is turkey when it’s skinless and cooked without oil. But the burger’s size, fat content and condiments determine its total nutritional value and calorie count.

So who would guess that Ruby Tuesday’s Bella Turkey Burger contained more than 1,100 calories and 71 grams of fat? The extra baggage comes from its bloated size, signature sauce and cheese.

Not only that, turkey is frequently ground with its skin on, adding calories and unhealthy saturated fats.
