Chemo trial begins today

NEW ULM —
Colleen and Anthony Hauser of Sleepy Eye believe that traditional medicine and a healthy diet, not chemotherapy, is the best way to treat their 13-year-old son’s cancer.
But Brown County has filed a petition arguing that not performing chemotherapy constitutes neglect because doctors say the child, Daniel Hauser, has a much larger chance of dying without it. The county’s petition seeks to force the family to go through with the chemotherapy.
District Judge John Rodenberg will hear testimony in the case today. If both sides aren’t finished in one day the court will take the unusual step of hearing the case on Saturday because time is a factor with cancer treatment.
The case navigates the “very fine line between parents’ rights to manage their child’s welfare and the state’s rights to protect children,” Brown County Attorney James Olson said.
He said the county and the Hausers disagree about how best to protect Daniel, but says both sides have good motives.

Postscript 5/21/09: ...the Disturbing Fate of 13-Year-Old Daniel Hauser
(NaturalNews) You see it in newspapers and websites across the 'net: People insisting that 13-year-old Daniel Hauser must be injected with chemotherapy in order to "save his life," and that anyone refusing to go along with that is a criminal deserving of arrest and imprisonment.
What's most astonishing about the mainstream reaction to the forced chemotherapy of Daniel Hauser is not merely that they believe states now own the children, but that they believe in the entire world there exists but one single treatment for cancer, and it happens to be the one that makes pharmaceutical companies the most money. The arrogance (and ignorance) of that position is mind boggling.
