Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels--R-pod

One evening, returning to my Little Guy, I drove very slowly through Tom Johnson Camping Center looking at all the units. To my surprise, I saw a trailer--& brand name--I was not familiar with. Read a review by Roaming Times, and see the floor plans for R-pod.

Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels--Bright yellow T@B

My Little Guy Silver Shad-ow attracts a lot of attent-ion!! The last couple of days, several campers have told me there is another "teardrop" at this location. ~ "Where? I haven't seen it." This morning I took a medium-size walk and found the T@B at the extreme back of the Service / Repair area. Now, THAT (bright yellow all over) trailer really catches your attention!!

Back in the Lobby, I told a new ac-quaintance (commenter re: yellow teardrop) that I am familiar with that make from liter-ature. "They cost nine, ten, eleven thousand dollars!! I have some brochures...." Then I launched into conversation about how much less my Little Guy Silver Shadow "utility" model cost. "Granted, mine isn't fancy but I can do a lot of traveling with the difference in price between the two!!" ~~ Since that conversation--for the sake of this blog--I did a Google search (so I could add a link) and MSRP (Manufacture Suggested Retail Price) is $18,000. You'd think I would have remembered that they were THAT expensive?!?!

~~~~~~~~~~
My new friend, Linda, picked me up at 10:00 and we went to the Marion Senior Center for lunch. Everyone was so friendly and I was treated to lots of hugs!!
Back at
Tom Johnson's Camping Center, I've worked on my blogs and had nice conversations with fellow RVers.
We are experiencing rain off-and-on so I am staying inside the building. I don't want to "go shopping." There isn't a thing I need!!
Over one thousand silver-haired gospel music enthusiast' packed the pavilion, and grassy area. The weather was abso-lutely per-fect: Sun-shine, cool breeze, no humidity!! I'll never know whether bad weather limited attendance earlier in the week, or whether everyone was waiting to hear these artists. We enjoyed the Hoppers, Sue Dodge, Bob & Jeanne Johnson, McKameys, and The Greenes. ~~ Tim Greene went into great detail about his healing (in leu of a sermon). I can't remember when I was so moved by a man's testimony. What this man-of-God went through is reminiscent of what Job (in the Old Testament) went through.
Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels--Blue Ox & more
Before I left Shelby, I had the bright idea to load the Blue Ox Bike Rack into the back of the KIA. "Perhaps an RVer will want it" was my rationale. (I had been trying to sell it at the Flea Markets but not a single person had expressed interest.) I had a large sign that advertised the many features of this "top of the line" bike rack. On Tuesday I positioned the sign near the men's restroom--and it got thoroughly soaked!! ~~ This morning (7:30 ??) it occurred to me that I should add my phone number to the sign (it had my space number). "Dummy, you are seldom at your site; how can anyone buy...??" I added my phone number--and had a phone call about 9:30. "Do you still have the bike rack?" "Yes." "Where are you?" "At the lobby." Moments later a gentleman rode up on his bike; I was standing by my KIA watching for him. By 10:15 the Blue Ox was tentatively attached to his trailer hitch and I had extra cash in my pocket. We are both praising God for His faithfulness by providing for our needs!!
The transaction dovetailed with the arrival of my new friend--Linda (who lives in Marion). She had invited me to pick blueberries, and go to the Soup Kitchen where she and her husband volunteer. It was delightful to have somewhere to go, and someone to share with. (I was still unable to access the Internet for WiFi.) I sense that Linda and I were cut out of the same cloth; our likes and thoughts are almost carbon copies. Linda didn't want me to add her to my blog but I feel compelled to sing her praises: She is a modern day "Good Samaritan." I marvel at the number of people she is taking to the doctor, or dentist, or therapist. She visits the convalescent home and gives the residents small bags of freshly picked, thoroughly washed blueberries. ~~ I'm already programmed into Linda's Blackberry (phone) for activities tomorrow.
(You need to ignore the time stamps at the bottom of the messages. I open a new post, and save it for later use. It will have the correct date but time is inconsistent with the content of the blog. For example: The time stamp [here] says 2:22 PM and was hours prior to the Singing. Oh, the things I do in an attempt to bring pleasant messages to my readers!!)
Hundreds of concert-goers were already gathered in the shade of the pavilion--at 6:00 PM. I failed to check the temperature but in the 90's. It was extremely humid!! My trailer had been closed up all day so I opened the windows a little so it would not be like a sauna when I went to bed. ~~ An hour later, we had another cloud-burst (and, yes, things got wet in the trailer). Blissfully, the air was much cooler. Before 8:00, I walked to the trailer for my sweater because I actually felt chilled!! ~~ The artists did not sing this song but it is appropriate: "Showers of blessing, showers of blessing we need!! Mercy drops round us are falling, but for the showers we plead!!"
Tim Greene delivered another challenging message--preceded, and followed, by beautiful music. We enjoyed
Brian Free & Assurance, Inspirations, Lulu Roman and The Greenes. ~~ FYI: If you click Lulu web site, you'll see the image of a very large lady. However, we saw a woman who was a of her former self: Lulu has lost 222 pounds!! She looked great!!
Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels--Little Switzerland
I slept comfortably during a long rainy night. It was a mild rain and barely audible. It was 71 degrees in the trailer when I went to bed at 10:30--but felt cold. Likewise, at 2:30 AM it was 71 degrees and I spread a second blanket over me. I was up at 6:30 AM (70 degrees), grabbed my clothes and headed for the nearby restroom. It was raining when I emerged!! I ran for the KIA and drove a quarter-of-a-mile (more or less) to the beautiful lobby at Tom Johnson Camping Center. I'm here for an extended period--until it stops raining. Actually, the weatherman says rain "off and on" all day--and all week!!
~~~~~~~~~~

Shortly after I typed those words, the "server" for free WiFi at Tom Johnson's "went down." I waited around until noon and it appeared that we would not have access to the Internet. The sun had made an appearance, the sky was blue. I sat in my KIA, looking at the map and wondered where I might go. I saw a familiar name and it was a location that I had anticipated visiting at a later date. ~~ The next paragraph was written (long hand) while the details were fresh in my mind (not knowing when I might be able to access my blog).

"Back at [space] B-5, at 3:00, after a delightful little trip. I had been in the lobby... until noon but could not finish my blog. It still looked like it could rain at any minute so I decided to watch a DVD. I watched 'Nat-ional Parks of the Appalachians' (re: Great Smoky Mountains, Blue Ridge Parkway, and Shenandoah, [purchased on the Blue Ridge Parkway earlier in the month]). With some sunshine and blue skies I felt I should "do something" besides sit in the lobby!! I looked at my map and realized 'Little Switzerland' was not too far. I left Tom Johnson's, in Marion (elevation 1395 feet) at 12:07, and took SR 221/226 to the mountain community (elevation 3200 feet). I was climbing steadily and fourteen miles later (12:30) I was in the clouds. Very limited visibility!! It turns out that Little Switzerland is just one retail building, and a Post Office. I browsed the 'General Store' and bought two postcards. When I read the menu, the tomato, garlic, onion, basil soup sounded good (on a damp, dark, cloudy day). The restaurant was almost full and many on the outdoor patio. Strange to see so many in an out-of-the-way location. The cashier said they are always busy because 'we're famous for good food.' At 2:00 I was back at Tom Johnson's lobby (35 miles round trip) and learned the server was still down. I got into conversation with another camper and that took some time (but I have nothing but 'time.')"

It was 97 degrees inside Little Guy at 3 o'clock when I opened it up to air out and dry out. When I moved the thermometer to the shade, outside the trailer, it was 93 degrees. Very humid!!

Unexpected blessings came my way in the late afternoon. I decided to phone a couple that I met at "Singing on the Mountain" at Grandfather Mountain on 6/28/09. "Hi Linda, this is Lorraine. We met at Grandfather Mountain." She interrupted me with "Where are you??" "I'm in Marion, at the 'Singing.'" They, too, were at the pavilion and she waved and drew attention to where they were sitting. (I had walked to Little Guy to find the phone number.) Imagine this: They were across the aisle, one row back, from my lawn chair. Only moments earlier I had been talking to the folks seated nearby (because it was still an hour until the concert). Linda had noticed me because she thought I might loose the colorful wristband identifying that I had paid for all five.... We shared details regarding our activities during the evening--between inspirational artists.

The Greenes are the host of the event titled "27th Annual Jubilee." They shared the stage with the Primitive Quartet, Easter Brothers, Jeff & Sheri Easter. Tim Greene preached a challenging message!! ~~ It was a beautiful evening--weatherwise--compared to the deluge the night before!!

Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels--Marion, NC

Since 5:30 PM, Monday, July 27, I have been on a camping site at Tom Johnson RV Center in Marion, NC. It was a 50 mile drive from Shelby. I exper-ienced a few sprinkles of rain--very few--but I'm told it was total cloudburst here at the camp ground an hour earlier. It was several hours before we had more rain--and it curtailed my delightful walk around the enormous site. ~~ An amusing incident at 3:45 AM: I walked to the nearby restroom... and when I emerged less than five minutes later it started raining. I RAN for the trailer but got soaked!! Then it poured down for about ten minutes, and was loud and it sounded like I was inside a drum!! As quickly as it started, it stopped. We've had a beautiful morning. ~~ I've shown Little Guy several times; everyone exclaims about "how cute." ~~ I've had a shower in a gorgeous restroom. ~~ I've eaten a big salad brought from home. ~~ I have free WiFi. ~~ Just wanted to "touch base" and let you know where I am and what I'm doing. ~~ Gospel singing tonight with The Greenes and other artists!!

Owning a Little Guy has its advantages--and dis-advantages!! It doesn't cost a fortune for gasoline (like filling a Class A motorhome). It saves me the cost of a motel / hotel. However, when it rains I am at a disadvantage!! About 4:00 PM I took shelter in the pavilion (roof only, open sides) because I saw the storm on the horizon. I didn't expect it to last long, nor be severe, so I left the KIA and trailer windows open about half an inch. We had mild rain initially but became a cloudburst between 6 and 7!!!!

The Greenes had advertised that the Gospel Singing would take place "rain or shine"--and it started on time (7:00) and we were soon oblivious of the rain. Perhaps the weather kept some people away--perhaps not. It was great!! We were entertained by The Greenes, Naomi Sego, Ivan Parker, and Gold City.

Yes, things were wet in my KIA and trailer!! The maps, and guide books on the passenger seat are soaked!!

7 Ways and 7 Days to Renew Your Life

I've reviewed the "7 Ways..." (in my July 7th blog) and find I will not be able to carry them out in the sequence suggested. I think I'll be stuck on Day 1: Re-Charge, for a while!!

Day 2: Re-Vamp, and Day 3: Re-Cycle, will have to wait until I get "traveling" out of my system!! I think "Re-Charge" is of paramount importance!! However, I did some of Day 3 (yesterday) by cleaning my office space and discarding a mountain of paper. Also decided I won't hang on to all the brochures, and maps, from the recent trip. (If I drive that way again, the Rangers will hand me new material.)

~~~~~~~~~~
I received an e-mail with this
inspirational message. I want to share it with you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. My friend sent these tips:
When you enter the Garden -- click on the little lightening bug and follow instructions.
Unlock the door with the key by dragging the key to the lock.
Follow the bug, open the book... I have never seen anything like this.
When you get to the fountain, click on each rock.
Try to find the lightening bug to continue.
After the fountain, click on each of the sticks on the left.
On the table, you need to click on the scrolls.
Each scene has something to click on but you should be able to figure it out just by moving your mouse around.
There are many places to click on each page, so try to find them all before clicking on the bug again.
It is so beautiful to go through. I hope you enjoy.
When Others Fail Us
The TV message, "When Others Fail Us," by Dr. Charles Stanley (First Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA) was very encouraging for me. He addressed the pain we experience when we have been dropped from the lives of family and friends. "Being a discard" [my words] is the reason I experience deep depression.
I've often said "I need to be needed; I want to be wanted." I had so many valuable talents to give to Hallelujah Acres--but was unceremoniously relieved of my many responsibilities (along with eight others that day). Likewise I had computer skills and a head full of knowledge about genealogy and Brethren families. My "volunteer" services were rejected by the Brethren Heritage Center. (Just two examples in very recent years.) I almost never hear from my children!! I send greeting cards, gifts, and e-mail, but it's a one-way street. Where did I go wrong?? It has been my desire to live "A Purpose Driven Life" -- not a life without purpose!!
It's a sad set of circumstances when we come to the sunset years of our life and we haven't a friend, or family, to call on in case of emergency. I'm not alone, I hear the same story from many Seniors. Our Country is disintegrating!! (I'll not comment on the bailouts of banks, auto industry, etc., but was saddened to see a sign in a furniture store: "Going out of business after 65 years." The once-thriving furniture industry is suffering; the textile industry is gone from North Carolina. Unemployment is high in the Carolinas.)
I Have All in God
God of your goodness, give me yourself,
for you are sufficient for me...
If I were to ask anything less I should always be in want,
for in you alone do I have all.
The Hurrier I Go, The Behinder I Get !!
I checked my favorite best friend--Google--and "sure enough" there are a lot of web sites with the title "The hurrier I go, the behinder I get." I suspect the saying is another of the Amish / Pennsylvania Dutch sayings--like "Too soon old, too late smart."
I spent a lot of time on the computer polishing and perfecting the
Teardrop travels blogs. I sent several e-mails to appropriate Teardrop sites. Two hours go by and it seems like only ten minutes. Know what I mean??
I shifted things around that are destined for another (future) Flea Market (or a donation to a Thrift Shop?). Nothing accomplished!!
I loaded things into the KIA, and Little Guy, in preparation for another trip.
But I really don't have anything to show for my day!! It has been extremely hot (91 degrees at 6 PM). I feel "wilted."
Little Guy Teardrop Trailer--Repair (2)
I titled this "Little Guy Teardrop Trailer--Repair (2)" but it was actually "Repair One" (completed on June 2nd). When I opened the trailer after a long winter, I discovered the bracket had splintered out of the wood (and was laying on the floor as you see it). It is the bracket that supports the pneumatic hinge for the hatch-back. I used a mop to hold up the hatch. With minimum effort (plus screws and cleat that I already had) I have it working good as new!!
Billy Graham Library
4:44 PM: I've been home less than an hour. Before I got out of bed this morning a still small voice said "Go to the Billy Graham Library." So I did!! It was a marvelous experience and really encouraged my own faith as I read information in the various displays. There were also many motion picture and video presentations. It was also so uplifting to see so MANY visitors!! I don't know if a bus load came from a Senior-living facility but a large number of folks with walkers, wheelchairs, and canes. ~~ The Billy Graham Library, in Charlotte, is just 46 miles from my apartment.
En route... I stopped at Sam's Club to return the electric "throw" (purchased day before yesterday) because it would not heat up. I didn't really need it because (as I said in an earlier blog) I'm traveling with one heater, two sleeping bags, and three blankets!! And I seldom park the trailer any place with electricity!!
I found a new restaurant today. It is called
Qdoba Mexican Grill and they have "vegetarian" items on the menu. I had a Tostada Salad. Yum, yum!!
~~~~~~~~~~

10:10 PM: I've just returned from the Senior Center where I was a volunteer cashier at the snack bar. There was a dance--Hawaiian theme--and well attended. I was dressed in a bright-colors muu-muu with orange-color flip-flops.

Little Guy Teardrop Travel Trailer--& mundane info

We had rain here, and all around us, last evening and night. There was a beautiful lightening display--but too far away to hear the thunder. (A man at Charlotte International Airport was hit by lightening and may not survive.) It is overcast and extremely humid this morning!! I've put my tools away (cleaned the drill bits that had dried "mush" on them). I've picked up all the nuts & bolts, and nails & washers, and returned them to the plastic jar where I keep all those things "in case I need them." Because of my miscellaneous, the first repair project (on June 2nd) didn't cost me a penny. However, I had to buy hardware for the current repair. Looks good (if I do say so myself).

Yesterday I even splurged with the purchase of "black streak remover" and I've used it this morning. It works!! It's also an "all purpose" cleaner so I scrubbed almost every inch of Little Guy. I need to use the kitchen step ladder to reach the top... and it is too hot right now. The trailer shines like a new dime!!

FYI: I decided I'd leave the license plate tail light alone (left side). I'll repair it when (if) it gets "wobbly" (I have the hardware). The project should have been simple!! Frankly, a guy would have had the same circumstances, and frustration, that I experienced!! I used a big "anchor" and quarter-size washer. Before and after pictures below.

I may need to succumb to turning on the air conditioning. I plan to iron some garments this afternoon. ~~ I want to tell you that it feels so good to feel good!! I was so sick for many months with acute ozone poisoning.

Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels--Sequel

A busy day--spending money!! I rarely leave my apartment--if I'm not traveling. Occasionally to Sam's Club for a few things (including organic salad greens)--and gasoline. From Sam's Club, Walmart, and Shelby Hardware, I have additional items to load into Little Guy. Food for the next trip; hardware to repair the tail light. ~~ I thought I found an ideal item for trailer travels: An electric "throw." It is much smaller than a twin electric blanket so perfect for one person (me) in Little Guy. I've plugged it in and it does not get warm!! ~~ As I've indicated before, I seldom stay in a RV resort; I rarely park any place with electricity. However there might be such an occasion (Rally) and I would be prepared if we have a cold night. (There was an occasion over a year ago, at my first Tearjerker's Rally, when I didn't have adequate heat. [Electricity--but no heater.] I was an icicle when I drove away from the Resort, at daylight.) Now I travel with two sleeping bags, three blankets, a heater... and I'll NEVER experience that misery again!!

We've just had a downpour of rain and everything is soaked!! I won't work on the
repair project this evening. I'm frustrated that it's taking so-o-o long!!

I visited my favorite thrift shop (Value Village) and purchased three pair of shorts and a swim suit. I didn't have enough shorts for the previous trip--and wore jeans. I had to struggle to get into the swim suit I wore to enjoy the hot tub at Shenandoah Valley Campground. (How embarrassing! I've gained weight!!) Now I have a nice [brand new] large "Granny" swimsuit that may actually be too large!!

En route home, I stopped at my local KIA dealership to tell my salesman how much I appreciated the standard transmission feature during my trip along the
Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. Charles is such a treasure!! He sends me a birthday card and Christmas card; he phones occasionally to see how I am.

~~~~~~~~~~
Postscript, 7:47 PM: Mission accomplished (almost)!! Such a cool, lovely evening!! I felt compelled to work on "the project." Just as I started to tighten the wing nuts on the bolts of the finished product, it started to rain. The tail light bracket seems very snug; I hope and pray that the "anchor" behind one hole, and very long wood screw for the other hole, hold indefinitely!!
Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels #12
My repair project on the Little Guy Teardrop trailer has been on "hold" today. It rained last night, it has been overcast all morning, there has been a wind and the air feels cold to me. What a difference in 24 hours!! Seventy-seven degrees, at one o'clock, per the thermometer on the porch. Yesterday, at this hour, it was eighty-two, sunny and warm.
If life gives you lemons, make lemonade!! So I used the morning to finish writing the details about my recent trip along the
Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive.
I have a simple digital camera (that I bought in a Pawn Shop). I only recently learned how to get the pictures from the camera to the computer--and ultimately to my blog. I don't know how to set the date or use some of the features; I'm not "a photographer." I wish the two pictures (above) were of better quality but "what you see is what you get." These were taken between milepost 95 & 96 at 10:20 AM, Thursday, July 16th. I was standing on the double yellow line in the middle of the Parkway. I took a picture to the East and then pivoted around and took a picture to the West. I found it "scary" at times to be driving along the top of the mountains looking down on both sides!! ~~ The trip accomplished exactly what was suggested in Day 1 of
7 Ways and 7 Days to Renew Your Life (published on my blog 7/7/09). I was lifted from depression to glimpses of Heaven.
Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels--Repair
The only time I sat down today was in the car going into town. I needed a couple of "mollies" to make a repair on the Teardrop trailer. I explored the sizes, and variety, at our hometown Shelby Hardware and was sure I had the right item. Too big... so back into town to exchange. Still too big... so I planned to drill the hole a little larger!! The battery was almost dead on my cordless drill--so it is charging. I'll finish the project tomorrow (although I hate to "put off 'til tomorrow what I can do today"). Today was just right--weather wise--to work on Little Guy: Temperature in the eighties and no humidity. What am I repairing? you ask: The tail light bracket on the "passenger side" of the trailer (and tomorrow I'll reinforce the tail light bracket on the "driver side" because "a stitch in time saves nine"). Behind the aluminum siding is "mush"!! Whatever material was used (pressboard?) has disintegrated and a screw has nothing to connect with. ~~ That's the same side where the hatchback pneumatic bracket splintered out of the wood--and I had to repair. ~~ Another hour was spent visiting two other stores to find a license plate holder bracket because "odd shape, odd size." I plan to attach one when I reassemble the tail light bracket. I'll display the Sign of the Fish. Want to know what prompted today's project?? Several of the guys at the recent Teardrop Rally pointed out the "wobbly tail light."
This morning I did three small/medium loads of laundry. I'm getting things ready for another trip. I had planned to visit the coast of North Carolina (or Myrtle Beach, South Carolina). In the Post Office today, to pick up my mail, I got into conversation with a gentleman also picking up his mail. He had just returned from "the beach" and advised me to postpone my trip until late September or early October. "Too many people, too much traffic."
If I could rewind the clock, there's one incident I would eliminate from today's calendar: I experienced a cut on my arm. The "L" bracket is sharp as a razor blade!! I found that my Band-aids are so old they have lost their adhesive!! (You can speculate about how old they are when they are in a metal container and imprinted across the front "70 assorted bandages only 89 cents.")
Postscript 4:00 PM, Tuesday, 7/21/09: The weather warmed up, and I was up-to-the-minute with details of my recent trip, so I thought I'd complete the repair project. The second purchase of an item to secure the bracket would not work either!! There is only about a sixteenth of an inch of material at that point--just the exterior "skin." I cut a wire hanger and poked it through--and there isn't anything behind!! The trailer frame prevents me from trying to glue a small block of wood behind.... What's a gal to do?? (I'll ruminate on it for a while and come up with an idea.)
Computer overload !!
Yesterday, I spent the entire day at the computer. I am anxious to get the details of my trip published to my blog. Honestly, I was "bad"; I didn't make the bed or change out of my nightgown!! Didn't comb my hair either!! I'm prone to "a one track mind" and I like to finish a project before I move on to another!! ~~ Today I have focused on necessities (like groceries) and some exercise spiritually and physically. ~~ While in Front Royal, Virginia--at a Big Lots--I was given a coupon for 20% off purchases on Sunday. I handed the coupon back and told the clerk I live out-of-state. "They're good everywhere" was the reply. So I shopped Big Lots this afternoon--and spent over $60. Frequently (like today) I find "organic" canned goods and food items (at greatly discounted prices). I stock up on them because they won't be there on the next visit!! (I don't use a lot of canned goods but it is a good idea to have some in the cupboard in case of emergency. Yesterday I opened a can of soup because the refrigerator was bare. Oops!! "Almost" bare because I had fresh tomatoes and some watermelon.) ~~ I'm totally recovered from my incident with diverticulitis.
Appalachian Trail
In an earlier blog I mentioned that I walked on the Appalachian Trail. It was brief!! Here are my pictures.
Can you see all those gnarled roots around that tree, and in the path (picture 3)?? The trail is steep (picture 4)!! It boggles my mind that Bill Irwin walked the entire length of the Appalachian Trail with only his dog. Bill is blind--and author of Blind Courage. The young couple that I met said it was very strenuous--and they appeared to be physically fit!!
Greetings from Shelby
At this very hour (8:30) Tuesday morning I was in an Internet Cafe in Front Royal, Virginia. Seventy-two hours later and I've enjoyed a good night's sleep in my bed, in Shelby, North Carolina!! As a point of comparison: Front Royal is not far from Washington D.C.!! Shelby is almost on the South Carolina line. I've driven 543 miles from the Walmart parking lot (where I spent Monday night) via the Skyline Drive, in Virginia, and Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia and North Carolina. I've taken a number of pictures, and I've written notes, so I'll publish some interesting "blogs" soon. I won't accomplish the task in one day because I am recovering from diverticulitis. Yes, Tuesday morning I woke up with a very sharp pain on my lower left front. It might have been caused by something as small as a seed in the fresh Blueberries purchased at the Farmer's Market on Saturday?! I was in a lot of pain both Tuesday and Wednesday. No sharp pain yesterday (Thursday) but my entire abdominal area is tender and sore. ~~ Before I do anything else, before I unhook the Little Guy teardrop trailer, I must take the vehicles to a self-service car wash!! ~~ Thanks for your interest in my trip!!
~~~~~~~~~~
At the bottom of the "Welcome" sign, it says "Home of Earl Scruggs." Well, being a West Coast resident most of my life, I did not know who Earl Scruggs is. I did a little research, and bought a CD of his music. Perhaps his most famous... was the theme for the TV show "Beverly Hillbillies." ~~ The sign also says "City of Pleasant Living" and I totally agree!!
~~~~~~~~~~
3:30 PM and the trailer has had a shower, and is unhooked. I've been at the computer for a couple of hours working on several "blogs" that I will publish as soon as they are perfected in every detail. It is 91 degrees and very, very humid!! (Weatherman says "feels like 104.")
~~~~~~~~~~
4:30 PM and 92 degrees!! I finally turned on the air conditioning. I prefer to have windows and door wide open to let air flow through. ~~ I'm looking forward to cold watermelon for supper. I bought the watermelon, and homegrown tomatoes, from a Farmer's Market at the Junk in a Trunk (Flea Market) sale. My vendor space was paid for but I was just too tired to load things last night, or this morning, and set up early. However, on my way to the car wash I stopped by to see vendor friends. I was greeted with "We were just talking about you--and wondering where you were."

Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels # 11--Counting the Cost

When I drove North on July 8th, I encountered two detours on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock, and Boone. In my humble opinion, 5:30 PM was too early to stop and camp at Doughton Park (milepost 239), and if I continued to Julian Price Memorial Park (milepost 297) or Linville Falls (milepost 316.3) for camping I'd have to travel through the detours again. At a moment's notice, I decided to leave the Parkway at State Route 18 (milepost 217). That was a friendly reminder of "home" because it goes within a quarter mile of my apartment!!

I pulled into my driveway at 8:14 PM. I had traveled 304 miles since 9 AM. Over 180 miles were at 25 and 30 miles per hour!! Judging from the number of miles, and the number of pictures, you can see that I was feeling much better (Praise the Lord!!). I had traveled a total of 1193 miles in nine days.

The major expense for this trip was (understandably) gasoline at $135.70 (and I still have half a tank). If I'm figuring this correctly, that's less than twelve cents a mile!! Next was the luxury of three nights camping at Shenandoah Valley Campground--for the Teardrop trailer owners rally--totalling $99.23. Traditionally, I stay in Walmart parking lots so the RV Park was a BIG expense. On this trip, two nights (free) at Walmart and two nights in National Park campgrounds at $8.00 each (because I have a Golden Age Pass). One night, free camping, in a campground in Buena Vista, Virginia. Dividing the $115. by 8 equals approximately $14.40 per night. (I'm quick to tell people that traveling with the Teardrop trailer sure saves on hotel/motel expense!!) I left home with fruit and veggies; purchased more at a Farmer's Market in Staunton, Virginia, and (later) from a Food Lion. Add in three restaurant meals, some postcards, and a DVD of the Skyline Drive, Blue Ridge Parkway, and Great Smoky Mountains and incidental expenses totaled $135. A grand total of $385.14 for eight days!!

A very reasonably-priced vacation--and it lifted my spirits from depression to abundant joy!! On a little-traveled highway, I was admiring God's beautiful handiwork; I was listening to traditional old hymns of faith (on CD)!! Truly a "mountaintop experience"!! The weather was lovely; the food was good!!

Speaking of "little-traveled": Frequently I drove for twenty miles without seeing another vehicle. This is my private, non-scientific, survey but I believe I saw ten motorcycles to one car, and five or six bicycles to one car. People aren't traveling!! There were three recreation vehicles in Otter Creek Campground. The Host said "Isn't this terrible?" and gestured to the acres of empty campsites. I was told that they were not full for the 4th of July weekend.

~~~~~~~~~~
A hymn I listened to, and sang frequently on this trip:
Lord, lift me up and let me stand,
By faith on Heaven's tableland.
A higher plain than I have found,
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels #13
There's an old saying re: "Learning something new every day." (I like that better than "Can't teach an old dog new tricks.") My new learning experience had to do with my KIA Sportage. I've had it for one-and-one-half years and never experimented with the standard transmission feature. Well, on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive we climb mountains and descend to the valleys. The route has endless curves!! I don't like to ride my brakes!! Repeat: I don't like to ride my brakes!! How wonderful to be able to shift out of automatic and drive in first, or second, gear. I loved it!! I practically had the Parkway, and Skyline Drive, all to myself so I could "shift down" and ascend or descend at a slow speed. When the occasional vehicle came up behind me, I always pulled off at the next overlook so the driver could pass. Question: Do I burn more gas driving in first and second?? Maybe a guy can let me know in the comments section.
Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels # 10
I departed Otter Creek Campground (milepost 60.9), on the Blue Ridge Parkway, at 9:00 AM, Thursday, July 16th; 68 degrees. I stopped about 5:30 PM Wednesday night because I was in a lot of pain. I immediately went to bed!! The Camp Host was very concerned about me, and looked in on me several times. She (Pat) brought me extremely cold Lipton Green Tea. After a reasonably good night's sleep, I was much better, no pain, some tenderness.
12 noon (milepost 144), I stopped to stretch, and eat some blueberries and an apple. Elevation 2687. At 12:47 (milepost 170), at Rocky Knob, the odometer recorded 1000 trip miles. ~~ I began to see Rhododendrons (again) about milepost 172/173. I saw them on the trip North but their location may be dependent on elevation?? There were only a few, and I believe (at their prime) they are pink. ~~ To celebrate the 1000 miles--and the fact that I was feeling much better--I stopped for lunch at the restaurant at Mabry Mill. (86 degrees.) I had a delicious Blackbean patty with large slice of onion, large slice of tomato, and lettuce on a white (yuk) bun. I can't remember the last time I had a "burger-type" sandwich in my hand!! Also had delicious potato wedges, and water. All that for $6.41 in a rural location on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Then I visited the Mill and walked around the area. ~~ Oops, I ate too much!! ~~ I revisited the Blue Ridge Music Center (milepost 213) from 3:50-4:40. ~~ At approximately milepost 227, I saw a Beagle dog along the parkway. Private property comes right up to the highway, in many areas. I photographed a bale of hay that is as large as my little Teardrop trailer!!
Numerous pictures taken throughout the day. Charming Mabry Mill--and I'm hiding under a hat because a "bad hair day." Music Center (Ricky Skaggs is performing in August), and Virginia-North Carolina state line.
Home again !!
In case anyone is checking... I returned from my drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway at 8:14 this evening. A total of 1193 miles!! I'm very tired!! The first thing I did: A nice hot shower and wash my hair!! I drank a pint of nice cold water (after the shower) and plugged in the computer. Here I am... with a promise to fill in all the trip details when I'm not so tired (302 miles today.)
Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels #7
7:27 AM; just a note. I am in a charming little coffee shop called "Daily Grind," on charming old "Main Street" of Front Royal, Virginia. I'm here because literature picked up on Skyline Drive advertised this place--with free WiFi.
After spending the night in the parking lot of Walmart, and a cup of coffee and a muffin, I will return to the
Skyline Drive of Shenandoah National Park. The vistas are similar to those on Blue Ridge Pkwy: S-P-E-C-T-A-C-U-L-A-R-!! Of course, I never tire of the endless G-R-E-E-N-!! (Forty years living in the desert makes me super-appreciative of trees, shrubs, and flowers!!)
I left the RV park about 9:30 yesterday morning enroute for Harrisonburg. I wanted to visit "Crossroads" (more on that later) but they are only open Wednesday through Saturday. After time spent at the Visitor's Center, I decided to drive to the
Skyline Drive and take it to the most Northern point. Accomplished!
Today I'll retrace my route and stop at all the Visitor's Centers, and Ranger Stations. It's a leisurely drive because I'm fortunate if I get over 35 miles per hour!! More details... and pictures after I get home, (I forgot the cable so I can't upload pictures during this trip.)
One request: Pray for me?!?! I have a pain in my lower, front, left. Can't be my appendix because that was removed years ago. I plan to ignore it and maybe it will go away?!?!
Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels #8--Skyline Drive
I left "Daily Grind," in Front Royal, at 8:35 AM, Tuesday, 7/13, ready to return to the Skyline Drive. Two ladies politely approached me and asked to see the trailer. I always love to "show off" my Little Guy!! It's sad how many women would like to travel but they don't want to travel alone. I'll be honest, I don't like to travel alone but staying home all the time is very depressing!! Less than 30 minutes later, near the Park entrance, at the Visitor's Center, a quotation caught my attention: "The promise of renewal has always drawn people to these mountains." (I certainly experienced "renewal" on this trip!!)
Shortly after taking this picture from the Skyline Drive back toward Front Royal, I had the sad experience of seeing a dead black bear cub on the highway. Just broke my heart!! I stopped at the next store and reported it. Frankly, someone must have been driving very fast!! The mountainous, winding highway demands slow speeds and makes it reasonably easy (in my humble opinion) to stop for even a chipmunk in the road!!
I wrote in my little notebook: "Skyland, 10:52-11:20, still have pain!! I stopped to tidy inside LG because I left in a hurry from Walmart. In the sunshine, about 84 degrees, and walking around, helped." It was at that time that I suddenly diagnosed my health problem: diverticulitis. Perhaps a tiny seed from the Blueberries purchased on Saturday? Perhaps a fragment of dry roasted peanuts purchased at Walmart?? I wrote: "So I'll be OK soon?!?!"
Byrd Visitor Center was interesting and I spent an hour there. Stopped to take two pictures toward Harrisonburg. Then at Brown Mountain Overlook I stopped at a shady place so I could lay down in the trailer. I noted: "I'm so tired and have pain." ~~ I couldn't continue to drive beyond the Loft Mountain Campground. I stopped at 2:40 PM and found a nice shady pull-through. (82 degrees.) I had only driven 88 miles. ~~ I slowly walked around the enormous campground determined to jiggle the tiny particle from the lining of my colon. ~~ I went to bed early but not before I had a delightful visit with a young couple hiking the Appalachian Trail (camping in an adjoining site). It's a marvel to me how anyone can traverse the route. I walked less than a city block--just to say I've been on the Appalachian Trail--and it was treacherous!! A blind man did it!! Read Bill Irwin's book Blind Courage.
Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels #9
From Loft Mountain camp site at 7:45 AM, Wednesday, July 15th, en route to Harrisonburg, Virginia. My destination: CrossRoads Heritage Center. I arrived at 9:15 and enjoyed the spectacular view while drinking a cup of green tea. They don't open until 10:00 and only Wednesday through Saturday. I was particularly interested in the project because I have Mennonite and Brethren ancestry--and some of my forefathers lived in the Shenandoah Valley.
I did not return to the Skyline Drive. Instead I took Interstate 81 to Staunton, and Interstate 64 to the Northern entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway. I entered the Parkway at 3:00 PM. Quite honestly, I was not feeling good (and cut my visit short at CrossRoads). Twenty miles on the Blue Ridge and I stopped to rest in the trailer. Sixty-two miles on the Blue Ridge and I stopped for the night at Otter Creek Campground. It was 5:30 PM and I had only driven 153 miles. I think "pain" was written all over my face because the Camp Host was very concerned about me, and she looked in on me several times (because I went right to bed).
Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels #5
Thanks for Provision
"Almighty and gracious Father, we give you thanks for the fruits of the earth in their season and for the labors of those who harvest them. Make us, we beseech thee, faithful stewards of thy great bounty, for the provision of our necessities and the relief of all who are in need, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen."
While I was attending a worship service here at Shenandoah Valley Campground, most of the "Tear-jerkers" packed their tents, loaded their towing vehicle and departed!! When they advertised this Rally for July 10-12 I made my reservation accordingly: I've paid for tonight (Sunday) as well as Friday and Saturday night. I'm told this is customary; campers leave early.
The large units are going... or gone!! It won't be long until I have the Park to myself!! I'll walk to the falls (I'm camped by a river). I'll spend time in the hot tub (but pass on swimming in the unheated pool). I'll read, and relax.
I wrote a "blog" recently about being a square peg in a round hole world. There might have been 500 people here at Shenandoah Valley Campground the last couple of days. Perhaps a dozen attended the informal worship service. There's a lot of truth to the saying about "marching to different drummer" (*). It's lonely (I admit) but there are days when God gives me a hug and declares how much He loves me!!
After the Farmer's Market, yesterday, I walked around a couple of blocks because that area of Staunton is old--and charming. On an otherwise deserted street a gentleman said "hello" and we began a conversation that lasted well over an hour. When he read the Christian message on my T-shirt he shared how he has a witness and testimony there, on the street, directly below his apartment. I was so blessed by the time of fellowship!! I knew that God had ordained this perfectly-timed meeting so two of His children could share, and He (the Father) could bless us. Praise the Lord!!
Little Guy Teardrop Trailer Travels #6
4:00 PM, Sunday, and 89 degrees inside Little Guy. Probably the same outside.... This entire day my KIA and teardrop trailer have been in bold sunshine!! When I wasn't taking a walk, I enjoyed shade under the "hatch back" next to the trees along the river. I don't like to complain about heat and humidity--so I won't!! A few minutes ago I impulsively decided to ask if I could move to a shady space. "Of course!!" So now I am all hooked up, under the trees, in a "pull through" space. (Why didn't I think of this sooner? There's an old saying: "Too soon old, too late smart.") I don't plan an early departure tomorrow but, essentially, I am ready to go.
It's nice to have free WiFi. I brought my laptop after reading on their web site that
Shenandoah Valley Campground offered this amenity. I thought we would have to go to a designated area at the store but to my surprise the signal carries all over this enormous area.
To my amusement, I noticed that a departing camper (in one of those large rigs) had a flat screen TV (about, or over, 30 inches) on the picnic table. I'm guessing that the family watched TV (or a DVD movie?)--in the cool of the evening--sitting in lawn chairs near a blazing fire ring. Most of the weekend campers had all the luxuries of home!!!!
People are so lazy!! I just noticed that two women drove the truck from an adjoining space to the store--which is about a football field length from our sites!!
5:00 PM, and the thermometer says 91 degrees in the shade, in a breeze, on the picnic table. I have eaten a fresh ear of corn (raw), a cucumber, and a tomato. All very good and very satisfying!! I've had a handful of air-popped corn from last night--popped in the nostalgia popcorn popper.
